    Default my computer

k, compared to most of the people here, I am technologically retarded

so the specs on my computer are:

    Intel Pentium Processor III
    450 MHz
    512 MB of RAM
    a newer NVIDIA graphics card

so can someone tell me if this a decent computer or in need of a serious update

For a gaming computer you are technologically retarded, for a web browser, it's fine....though xp would run slow on that thing.
You are in need of an upgrade, as your computer just went from horrbily old to obsolete in terms of games with the all the newest technology floating around.
With $1000 you could easily build a computer capable of running todays games well, with a view to upgrading in the future.
With $2000 you could build a nearly top notch computer.
With $6000 you could build the best (or as good as).
So it's a choice (or mix of) $1000 or $2000.

XP seems to run fine now as does my internet. Like I said, there is no way I'm spending more than 300 dollars on my computer

I disagree. If you want to play today's games, we are looking at 500. If you want the best bang for the buck, look to speed 800 or so. For a extremely good system, expect to spend 1300. For a though overkill, spend 2000.

Apologies, I meant Australian Dollars, and the last price is based on the most expensieve components, video card at nearly $2000, cpu at nearly $2000, etc....not that I would ever spend that much on a computer.....unless I was incredibly wealthy.

Here is what I suggest that you get:
    Sempron 2800 - 75ish
    512 DDR 400 ram - 40ish
    good skt 754 mobo - 70ish
    geforce 6600gt - 100ish.

    That should do the trick.

Thats pretty much what I'd recommend as well, though I'd go for a socket 939 motherboard myself, and an AMD athlon64 3000, there should be a combo for the 2 around for $100 to $150 (US).
