Wow! I must say, this is a facet of R:TW that was truly missing. In the regular R:TW when you get ambushed you don't deploy but your army squares off with the enemy army.
I love how you did the ambush battles, LT. 4th Legion, under Quintus Scipio just got ambushed by a Gaul force on their way to relieve 1st Legion's Fortification just north of Segesta. However, I was extremely fortunate in two things.
1: I had completed a Senate mission and been awarded a unit of Mercenary Elephants, which I incorporated into 4th Legion.
2: Most of my Principes and Triarii were at the head of the column, allowing me to hold a refused line from the weight of the Gaulic forces long enough for a Cohort(4) of Hastati to outflank and crush the Gaulic force that hit the flank of the column.
The only reason my troops weren't crushed and broken at the onset is because of the brave Elephant Riders who charged into the nearest Gaulic troops, crushing three units and holding their attack long enough to shift the line to the right. The battle was so quick and I was moving so fast I didn't have time to pause for me to take Screenshots, so the only shot I got was of the ending screen.
After the initial breaking of the Gaulic attack, my forces turned into a two cohort wide battle line with the Principes and Triarii retiring to the rear of the formation while the relatively untouched Hastati formed to hold off a counter attack.
The skirmishers were finally able to get into position and the 2nd attack was fought off with ease, but the Elephants ran amok and had to be put down.
The Gauls tried a third time and were repulsed with no casualties, I then let them retire off the field, since 4th Legion is a Siege Legion not a Standard and therefor had no Cavalry.
Anywho's heres the one screenshot I was able to get.
I love SPQR!
