    Default rtw on multiplayer

after having this game for almost 2 yrs now i decided to try playing on multiplayer for the first time.

Gamespy SUCKS, is what i have to say first of all. with all the crashing and etc...

how many of u play on multiplayer?

most people are quite easy to beat i'd say, but there are alot of pros as well.

if you ever played against other people before, why dont u post your strategies here?

personally discovered the true strength of the romans.

10 infantry, usually urban cohorts, 4 archer auxilia, 6 pretorian cavalry.

pepper with archers forcing them to attack me first, then cohorts will pepper them once more with javelins and then once battle is engaged i will flank with cav.

it works most of the times...

( whats ur strategy for beating romans? )

i have tryed to play on GS, yes... sure some players are easy, but again i must say i have seen some really good players also.
about my strategy: i dont have 1 strategy. it all depends on my mood and the faction my opponent has choose. that is my reason why i dont (and cant) sent my strategy. i always try to flank anemy, hit him from behind or flank him. other is improvison.

Hyungoku, I've only recently started playing MP. But that seems like the usual Roman setup and strategy, I guess it will work fine until you meet someone doing the same, then it comes down to a little micromanagement or experience.
Edit: I guess you are playing games with no rules (10 Urbans), in which case I think a couple of well placed Onagers may force you on to the front foot.

Old thread but had to chime in. Most Rome players on mp consist of only Urbans and Praetorian Cavalry with some archers, this is a very 2D way to fight, infact a smart player can beat that formation. First of all Urbans are expensive, so if u put in a moderately low (15-20K) amount of money they wont be able to upgrade. This is important because they'll rout much easier. For all their strengths, Romans have a hard time getting past phalanxes or mobile armies. For example a phalnx which covers both it's rear and it's front is invulnerable to cavalry or infantry flanks, furthermore a strong phalanx such as sacred band, Spartans, or even silver shields will not break easily and is almost invulnerable to arrows thanks to their high defense. so if u lign up two phalnxes like this:

    first line: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

    second line:^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

BOTH facing forwards so that their backs are not exposed to arrows, and phalanxes are flexible enough so that if the 2nd line gets attacked form the rear, they could turn to face them and then resume their normal frontwards position. If the cavalry is stupid enough to get behind the first line, then sandwhich them and then resume your formation. In my experience this almost always kills Romans. If u have some good cavalry to sandwich them up it's even better. remember that they need to attack first, a moving phalanx army is highly vulnerable. Once u have taken out their cavalry the troops are easier pickings. Don't waste ur money on any archers in this case for they will just get run down and serve little to no purpose against mighty Urbans.

Ironically the more varied ur army is the better, a flexible and strong Roman army consists of many troop types fit for many jobs, even weak ones to serve as bait or arrow fodder so the enemy runs out of arrows. This is important to remember.

I have more strategies against Romans if u guys are interested, this thread is close to dying so I'm not sure how many people will even see this.

the best way to run multiplayer is LAN! ive had lots of fun with 1v1 ownage. usually i play BI b/c i like their troop choices better. plumbatarii!! woot!

:p but yeah, that a pretty cheap roman build and wouldnt make it in multiplayer, they play w/ rules and such. in BI i love the Lombardi (if i cant play ere), they have lots of varied and strong troops. plus onagers! (if they are allowed) *nods* very awesome. course, ere owns them, but that life, isnt it?

and on that note, have a nice day.

if you play RTW on multiplayer you can always win or lose.

it depends on the fraction you take and what units you take and the strategy.

if somebody plays with romans and they have 10 unit infantry urban cohorts and 4 units archers and 6 cavalry then you probably lose a lot of battle against the more stronger players.

because if youre opponent would take the following 20 units, you will not win that easely.

    8 units cavalry
    4 units archers
6 units infantry and 2 units spearman.

youre spearman ten you can use to protect you archers against cavalry attacks and because youre cavalry is a little bit stronger then 6 units you would have more chances to win the cavalry battle.

and once you have taken out the enemy cavalry you can to flank attacks and attack in the back and you probably taken out easely the enemy archers and youre archers will stay intact if you have defend them well with youre spearman.

so with 10 infantry units you will have to play it very smart and fast to counter the enemy.

Just a breif thingy if your still not a good player use romans as they are kinda nooby but if you are a veteran use barbarian factions like i do.
