Well, in the game, it is a formation in which the soldiers in a unit close in tight, and overlap their shields. It is a very difficult formation to break, especially when en masse.
The first time I heard of a 'shield wall' was in reference to the formation used by the British at the battle of Hastings. The Normans had to try and break the shieldwall - I think they managed ot do so by feigning retreat and part of the formation chased them - only to find out it was a trick....

In terms of game mechanics does it give a defense bonus? Or does it simply make the formation harder to break up and pack more men into a smaller area?
