Default Re: READ THIS: NEWS July 2 ***** The latest news from the WS ***** Fashionably late! *****

The Writers' Study Newsletter - 9th July

What's happened, what is happening, and what is going to happen...

    The Intro
After hearing some your comments I've decide to try and 'jazz' things up a bit, but be warned jazzing things up isn't really my strong point... Remember here you can see the active storyboard, submission threads, and polls from the Writers' Study competitions. Things change weekly, so check in from time to time to participate in the community activities by voting, writing, commenting, reading and much more!

    New & Noteworthy CW Pieces
Now since none of you seem to use the Advertising Thread (USE IT!) I've decided to list some of the new Creative Writing stuff that I think you should check out. Please don't be offended if your piece isn't included, if anything it'll teach you to use the Advertising Thread more! I've chosen the Creative Writing section simply because we over in the Study are trying to attract more people to the section, and as the AAR forums have a lot of viewers I thought why not?

I've picked stories that are quite different from the norm we have, and ones that really deserve more readers:

The Last Great Acamar War - A relatively new story by AAR author Scottish King. It is different because of its genre, which is sci-fi, and after only two updates I was hooked. I guarantee you'll be the same. Read this, comment, and then rep the author for his hard work.

World of Gaiisha - A story written by a brony, but don't let that but you off. This piece by Derpy Hooves is set in the authors own world, and is include because the he wanted more readers, and rightly so. Although I haven't commented I've had a read through and I'm always wondering how the author comes up with all this. Worth a read. Period.

The Tale of Aron - For those of you used to play/still play ye old Runescape then this is the story for you. I follows the life of Aron and what he gets up to, which is quite a lot. He is defiantly a P2P. The author has put a lot of work into this, and several things have been redone, and I can tell you now it has paid off.

The Telian Chronicles - Another brony tale, this time by Princess Cadance (who is a bloke before you get any ideas). Again set in the authors own world, it is completely different to Derpy's. The amount of back story and added detail in this is staggering, and you will read it. Even better read both and compare and contrast, I'm sure the authors won't mind.

    Tale of the Week
The winner of TotW 146 has now been announced - see here to find out who it is.

Votes are now being taken for TotW 147, there is a great selection of choices this week so please read through them and then cast your vote here once you've decided.

And finally please submit your tale in TotW 148: Back Down South. Once you feel you're ready go here to do your business.

    The MAARC
There is a tie-breaker for 3rd place, and we can't find out 2nd and 1st until you've voted. So be quick, go vote now... here.

And just as dawn rises so does a new month, and you all know what that means. White Rabbits! Oh and a new MAARC has started, go and submit your (or another person's) AAR here.

Stuff for you... so look at it!
If you are looking to read past winners of our competitions, check out these threads:

    My last words... finally

Right there we go, I hope you guys like this format and I'd really appreciate your thoughts on the Chat thread, just so we know what to do next time. I've tried to change it a bit as I generally felt a negative response to the current layout - so as I've said your thoughts are a must. To round us off I want to say something you, the guest who is reading this. If you like what you've seen, and even if you haven't, please, please sign up and say hello, offer your thoughts etc. We are quite a friendly bunch, if you do happen to sign up drop me a Visitor or Private message and I'd be honoured to help you out.

    Tale of the Week
We are still waiting for the TotW 147 poll to end, so hurry up and cast your vote here!

TotW 148 has gone to the vote, and with some excellent submissions you'll be wishing for more than three votes. Read, decide and vote all on this thread.

This week's TotW has been inspired by a very old song... The Windmills Of Your Mind is open - and we want you to submit! (Which can be done here)

    *Important News*

    Introduction
Over the past couple of months there has been a whirlwind of activity behind the scenes in the Writers Study, and whilst some of you may have heard rumours (sorry) nothing definite has been confirmed. This is the aim of this little article, so to speak, to bring you up to speed with what we've got planned. A lot of the stuff is just minor things that won't affect your day-to-day visit, however for those of you who amongst the regulars of the Study you may catch up on some noticeable changes. Below we'll list most of the changes, and explain why they're happening, at the end we'd love to hear your thoughts.

    Forum Changes

    • First off many of you may have noticed the 'Grand Archive' in the CW section, it is still a wonder to me why it is there in the first place - but we've decided to move it into the Lounge as a place for old threads to be archived. Also the Duels and Challenges forum will be moved into the CW section from the TotW forum, but what for... Speaking of the CW section we'll be bringing back out the 'Gilded Hall', which will be a place to store finished CW piece, some of you older members may remember it from ages gone by. We want the CW forum to be on par with its AAR counterpart, and we feel it is only fair that they are treated the same.

    • The Narthex, which was a place for new writers to introduce themselves, will be merged with the WS Chat thread and will stay in the Lounge. We feel the chat thread should also be a place for new writers as well as a place to... well chat. Bearing the Lounge in mind the MAARC HoF will be merged with the WS Scoreboard and Hall of Fame, keeping the name of the latter. We felt the MAARC there is no need for both, and the MAARC is such a key part of the Study that the past winners can be immortalised in the Lounge.

    • Flying to the AAR forums one will notice some changes as well. The actual AAR forum will play host to the Finished AAR Index, so be sure to check it out before going to read your favourite genre - there is some great stuff. The individual ones will remain where they are, but for a general browse we suggest you check this out. Also the Advertising board will be moved from the MAARC forum into the Lounge because we want both works of fiction and AARs to be advertised. Finally in the vain hope that more people will submit their adverts we are moving the News Thread advertisement into the Lounge as well, so more of you will see it!

    New Competition
    • The biggest thing most of you'll notice is the new competition we are planning on introducing in September. This competition will be called The AAR of the Year (AAROTY) and has evolved from a thread posted by ybbon in the Lounge. It will be based in the MAARC forum (more on that later) and as September draws nearer we'll release more information as we finalize the details. It will be starting on the 1st September, so keep your eyes peeled.

    Other Stuff
    • Due to us realising that the MAARC medal is used for pretty much all our competitions we've decided to name it more aptly - The Writers' Study Competition Medal. Nothing besides the name will change, but we felt it needed to be done. If you have any more thoughts for a new name please let us know.

    • You have waited, we have waited, and you have waited some more... but finally we are making progress on the planning of the Writers' Study new publication - Writers' Block! This new publication should be popping up around September also. Feel free to speculate, but we ain't saying nothing... yet.

    • It is coming back... with a vengeance! In the not-so-distant future we will be bringing back the Duels and Challenges. An event where the underbelly of the Study will sharpen their quills and poison each other's mind in a battle of acumen, wit, and trash talking. We are finishing up on the details, and a FAQ thread will be posted in the Lounge.

    Closing Remarks
There we go, us at the Study hope you are looking forward to these changes as much as we are, they have been a long time coming and we can't wait to see the final product and share it with you. These changes will be implemented as and when, so keep your eyes open. Of course that's not all, we have heard some mysterious rumours about a new Creative Writing competition about to appear on the horizon. Some are saying it will be one of the greatest TWC competitions ever, others say the greatest - all we know is it is coming, and we all better be ready...

    - If you have questions or feedback, please use this thread: Writers' Study Chat and Feedback
