Boredom

I read this off another topic here called "How many campaigns have you beaten?", and I too share the problem where I'm so bored because I know nothing can beat me, and some guy suggested this to another guy:

If you're bored load up SPQR and play by the house rules (eg. not capturing major enemy towns or expanding beyound 20 provinces until after marius).

The bordom will go away pretty fast as you end up fighting 2-3 battles (at least) a turn just to survive.......

I've completed one as Brutii and then started playing with RTR (which was too easy) and now doing SPQR where the Germans and Gauls are kicking my little Julii bottom.....

A few questions with this:

For some reason, I can't choose SPQR, I can only choose Julii, Brutii, Scipii.
What are the 'house rules' he refers to?
If, I somehow got some hack to enable me to choose SPQR, how will it differ from using Jullii or any of those families? Why would I be fighting 2-3 battles a turn just to survive ?
What is RTR?
At the end he says ...doing SPQR where the Germans and Gauls are kicking my little Julii bottom...... I don't understand... If he's playing SPQR, he can't be playing Julii, and vice-versa.

I'm guessing he's using the SPQR mod, not the SPQR faction.

1. SPQR is the name of a mod, not the faction you are playing.
2. House rules for SPQR mod are posted in the SPQR mod forum...under hosted community projects, and RTW projects. (here at total war center)
3. SPQR mod is very hard. The AI recieves a lot of bonus's the player does not. The Romans WILL lose if you do not play aggressively. That is to say, if you are the Julii, and you can't defeat the Gauls, the support by means of trade and the like may lead the Scipii being invaded by Carthage, etc, etc.
4. RTR is Rome Total Realism, a different mod.
5. In SPQR, the mod, you still play as the three families, not as SPQR.
