    Default Has anyone read "Bored of the Rings"?

    Bored of the Rings is, as the name implies, a parody of the Lord of the Rings. It is written by Henry N. Beard and Douglas C. Kenny, first released in 1969 I think.

    So, have you read it and, if yes, what do you think of it?

    I have read its translation into Swedish, which is unusually good (translations of comedy books tend to drop much of the linguistic ludicry) and quite hilarious.

    Quite the opposite of the old translation of the Lord of the Rings, which features bawling elves and a Samwise who must see through the quest to destroy the ring...

    yes, I've read it, some 6 or 7 years ago. And I still shudder when I think of the sense of humour in this book. I think the teaser text was better than the whole book
    But that's just my opinion.

    Anyway, why do you ask this here???
    Will we see a "BotR-Submod" with smoke-blinded wizards and voluptous elven assasins???

    I read it a very long time ago. One odd thing about it was that my copy didn't mention the names of the authors, it was simply entitled "The Harvard Lampoon Bored of the Rings".

    Although I don't still have my copy, I still remember some of the joke variations on Tolkien's names. How can one not chuckle at the prospect of the virtuous realm of Two-Door under attack from the foul hordes of Four-Door? (or was it the other way around?)

    I seem to recall Tolkien's character Frodo Baggins becoming Frito Bugger, with a corresponding lowering of his moral tone and intelligence, partially offset by an increase in greed, foul language and a good helping of cleptomania.

    The only other thing I recall is that, like in Ralph Bakshi's 1978 animation of LOTR, the story was cut-off rather abruptly sometime after Helm's Deep with some kind of contrived ending pasted on.

    I suspect many of the humorous references were completely lost on me since they must have been fairly specific to a US audience.

    EDIT: I have dredged my memory for names, and I got this:
    Merry -> Moxie
    Pippin -> Pepsi
    Legolas -> Leg-O-Lam
    Gimli -> Gimlet

    Can anyone remember any more?

    EDIT2: It would appear there is a wikipedia entry. Looking down some of explanatory text, I can see that only people of a certain age and background are going to get the full benefit of the authors' wit.

    I loved that movie. I must have seen it 30 times. My dad used to groan when I always picked it as my movie at the video shop-"ok kids, one flick each."

    That was Ralph Bakshi, who was better known for Fritz the Cat.He wanted to make two movies, but after the first one flopped he gave up.

    In that case the post had a point, didn't it?

    I read it a very long time ago. One odd thing about it was that my copy didn't mention the names of the authors, it was simply entitled "The Harvard Lampoon Bored of the Rings".
    The book was first released by the Harvard Lampoon (a newspaper). My copy mention a transfer of copyright to the authors in the early 80:s or something.

    Anyway, why do you ask this here???
    Why not? This seemed to me as the logical forum to ask about a book that is a parody of the Lord of the Rings. If you mean "why ask at all?", the answer is simply that I am curious.

    I have actually thought a little about referring to this book in an AAR of mine that is presently in the planning stage, so that's another reason for me to be curious.

    i havent read that one, even though ive heard about it.

    ive only seen DM of the rings, a parody of Dungeon Master games blended with the LOTR mythos, and i still reread it from time to time since its so hilarious.

    another darker parody is called Lord of the Bricks (el Seņor de los Ladrillos), a chilean parody of the Lord of the rings books. its got a lot of inner references to chilean culture so its not as easy to get the catch on.

    Nope. Did read the Sellamillion, though. You could see the parody, but it was an interesting tale all on it's own. Especially since evil technically wins.

    Ah Bored of the Rings, loved it, must of read it 3 or 4 times in the last few years

    Its a bit short but makes up for it.

    I cant even remember what happens in the Balrog scene, will have to definetly read it again soon

    Still...

    "What have I got in my pocket?" Asked Bilbo.
    "Oh lemme see lemme see" Whined the poor creature.
    Bilbo hastily complied by pulling out the Luger and emptying it in the creatures direction, but then he felt pity.
    'Its a pity Iv run out of bullets'

    ROFL!

    I read it, thought it was rubbish. I also read The Sellamillion, which was also crap. The only reason I even bothered was because they were given as a gift.

    Why I did not like them was that they had an air of desperation about them, as if they were trying desperately to be funny or witty, which they failed drastically at. Instead it was just embarassingly badly written trash obviously relying on the association with Tolkiens works in order to sell.

    Avoid at all costs.
