Default A dumb thing I wanna do.

I really want to enjoy this mod, but I'm not sure it's my style. It's too complex, it's overly scripted . . . I dunno. It's not clicking with me, somehow.

But, I do recognize and enjoy all the hard work that clearly went into it, especially the units and models and animations. I love the units, and I'm sure the people who made them did, as well. I'd love to enjoy them in a less restrictive and crash-prone campaign. Which got me to thinking, could I play one of these factions in a different campaign?

Alright, I appreciate if this is a dumb idea that nobody wants to go along with, but I'm wondering if it's possible to:

    1) Take the Sylvannia faction from this, and separate it from the rest of the mod.

    2) Create a new mod, which adds it to the original M2TW Grand Campaign.

    3) Change the name of the faction to "Transylvania".

    4) Start it with a single new settlement, a castle named "Castlevania."

    5) Profit.

    Told you it was dumb.

Is this possible? Would I need to get permission before trying? Would it be hard?

Note: I am not a modder, have no experience, and will probably give up half way through trying anyway even if it's the easiest thing in the world. If, by some miracle, I did finish it, I wouldn't release it unless people asked, and it would be here with all credit going to the people who did actual work.

Firstly, welcome to the forums my friend. It's always great to see new members join the TWC

Secondly, all of what you wish to do is entirely possible. It just takes some know-how and some reading of various tutorials to know how to do it.

    1) Easy enough to do. If you just pm me, I can tell you which files you need in order to get all Sylvannia content out of the game.

    2) Easy enough

    3) Also pretty simple since that requires the editing of a few lines in one file

    4) This is where I am somewhat useless, but it is entirely possible to do

    5) Profit is a new mod with the undead running amok and creating chaos in the Middle Ages. What's not to love?

Also, I just want to say that this is not a dumb idea at all. I did something similar to this, just on a larger scale.

As for permission, you only need it if you plan to release it to the community. If you are just doing it for personal use (not putting a link on the TWC or any other website), then you don't need permission from the team.

Know how is something I . . . er, don't have, but I'm willing to give it a shot!

Exactly! I want to see vampires and maybe chaos demons unleashed on medieval Europe, just for the sheer wacky fun of it.

Right. I'll just make it for personal use, but I want to make sure that I'm not stealing from anyone, especially not the hard-working people who went through all the trouble of creating all these neat units.

Well hard is a somewhat relative term. I've converted about 50 factions from mod to mod, beginning with my Call of Warhammer vs The Third Age mod. Since then, I've been making crossovers of many mods just to have some weird battles and with some really fun outcomes. So for me, faction conversion is nothing that is challenging.

I admit it does get tiresome to edit all of the various files containing info about the faction you want to convert, but it really is not all that hard. You just have to want what you are creating and then it will seem like nothing. The only reason why some people think it to be hard is either a) lack of knowledge about the various game files or b) it's time consuming. I can tell you one thing, however. It is extremely rewarding to see two games clash in an epic battle against one another.

Do you even know how to mod? Killing the scripts and making everything compatible with Med 2 is almost impossible.

I myself would be extremely interested in this, Holy Pilgrim, can you help me as well? Would be interested in adding Sylvania or Chaos Undivided to the Grand Campaign, heh, turns out the Black Death was just a joke of Papa Nurgle, eh?

I'd be more than happy to assist you both. I must warn you both, however, that this will be a long and tedious path which will contain many bugs along the way (none of which we can't fix though)

Both of you will also have to be willing to learn and code in your free time since I won't be around 24/7 to aid you.

A very good place to start is with this: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=168944

This will create a new mod folder in which you can begin your journey.

Also, look around in the Mod Workshop for helpful tutorials on how to add units, make changes to factions and cultures, modify map regions, etc.

The tutorials located in the Mod Workshop will help you with what you want to accomplish. If I were you guys, I would first convert the faction to the game before worrying about the campaign. As you progress, make sure to check occasionally if your mod is in working order. And make sure you back your files up! The last thing you want to do is have to start all over after days of file editing. Always code in short bursts and check to make sure that not only your custom battles work, but your campaign map as well.

If you ever get stuck, pm me and I'll be glad to assist you. Don't be afraid to ask questions. There are many files you will have to add/change in order to get your mod to work, so there may be errors that you just simply don't know how to fix.

Not to single you out or anything, but it really isn't all that difficult. I've done it many, many, many times with various factions from various mods. It's really quite easy once you get the hang of it

How do you change most of the factions from Kingdoms factions then? I noticed things like some factions are originally Lithuania, etc. How do you change them back to Medieval?

Through extensive modding and a lot of copying, pasting, and modifying

But why convert several factions back to their original state when you could just export one? It saves a lot of time and effort.

It is still a tough pain. (IMHO, making a mod is easier than moding one).

To the op :I dont think your idea is dumb. I think it is an interesting idea and looks like a funny submod. The only problem is that it is a huge amount of work to be done. There already is a similar mod in the work in progress section which is called Zombie total war, maybe you should check it out and give the devs some help.

Ditto to that, Vampire counts were the main faction I wanted to play in CoW, getting to play them in historical Europe would be incredibly fun.

Not a dumb idea at all, I too am not a huge fan of heavily scripted campaigns despite loving the CoW custom battles, I just can't get into the campaign. Awhile ago I replaced hungary in SS with parts of Ostermark and Sylvania just for fun.

It's not that difficult to do, after you know how to do it. Actually getting the faction playable in a campaign however, is not something I could do.

    Clearly has his priorities straight.
