What version are you using? 6.4 comes with RR and BGR out of the box which are generally thought of as fitting that category.
There are alot of different sub mods that, depending on your taste, you should enjoy.
Have you played SS before?
Well I just started a SS game and in 1180 I can recruit Saxon Fyrd. So realism-schmeealism.
after 1150 or so they should be gone. and why do they get upgrades? once they get upgrades, they're a crappy SM clone. just leave them as cheap unarmoured peasants. and they ought to have shield wall capabilities (which is easy to enable in the EDU). that would give them some more "flavor" as a unit.
even though BGR adds realism, it makes the game 9999999x harder, so i never really enjoyed it. to each their own
Also im playing as the kingdom of scotland, any suggestions for how to gain an uppper hand against the english? learned the hard way that highlanders cant fight mailed knights very well in this mod!
There are sub mods that have much better scottish units.
Take Ireland early. You wont have to worry about other factions attacking you there so its free money. Then go by boat sacking their lightly defended settlements, then let them take them back. It will weaken them while giving you money.
build up your economy and production, try and get a castle with a drill square in time to train more proffeshinal units, and wait for norway or france to attack the main island, and attack them so the english are not so strong. also dont wait to late, you wouldnt want to be facing englands high/late tier heavy infrantry
dont get me wrong, i love using fyrd cause the give the english a larger recruiting pool. i just thing they stick around too long
i meant a combination of french speaking normans and anglo saxons. as opposed to a more homogenous "english" culture
