1 unit, but if they siege and then attack, its all about your skills. I have 1 militia unit in all my towns, and provincial (regional) army, but it depends. You learn when you play!
Apologies for anyone who's message i may miss or not be able to answer
I guess I was asking how does a 1 unit militia defeat a massive army with linemen and such. please point me to a thread. Basically I want to know how to build a army that I can capture city after city with in a domino fashion. and I had 7 units of milta behind in one city and they got owned by a Prussian army. How do i defend my cities?
I would suggest two tactics i use mainly in my games :
-Adopt a united front against the ennemy
-Control the key points of the map
The united front avoid a gap in your lines where the ennemy can infiltrate his armies. A united front is when you can draw a straight line on all your front cities without crossing a rebel or ennemy city.
The key points are basicaly bridges, roads.
Another useful thing if you don't want to let a full army in each conquered city : build an army uniquely assigned to defend your cities and based behind the front line, ready to rush to the besieged cities of your empire. During the advance of your front armies, your support army stays behind.

SO how do I build an armies that are big but do not go bankrupt?
Mr Kieffer sire, i'm playing as the british, what units should i use to babysit a bridge? and what units for an ambush. Be as frugal as possible please, i want to save as much money i can.
I have defeated a full stack army with 1 canon, 1 cav and 2 line inf along with citizenry, trust me it can be done. I think that could be a good option for a garrison force.

I don't know if such a thing actualy already exist but you could try to calculate the military value of each unit depending of their cost and their characteristics. It requires a bit of work but could be invaluable to set up garrison without risking bankrupcy.
As i would suggest either is to develop your economy, upgrading mines and merchants, multiplying trade offers with big countries. It depends pretty much of the country you are playing with.
Actualy i'm trying to get the "The Medallion of the Imperial Psychopath" achievement and i can see, being at war with every nations, it is pretty hard to build and maintain armies without a strong economy and trade partners.

If you worry about money, recruit dragoons. As they can move in campaign map faster than inf, and can dismount to easier defend you cities.

The garrison in your cities should just be enough to maintain order ... better yet if you don't need them to maintain order then disband them. Your focus should be building your field armies these will capture new cities and they should also be just big enough to win if you are winning and not using half your army in the battle then that army is to big take some units out and use them elsewhere. If you slowly build your armies they should not outstrip your economy just take it easy in the beginning until things settle down.
