Default Too much territory and slow start

    Just my two cents here.

I've tried to play as the Free People and the faction with the snake on their banner, and I've personally found it slow and uninteresting when I start out because of all of the settlements and low income. I know it's "historically" accurate for them to have those territories , but the feeling of true expansion is lost, at least for me. I think starting off with one or two settlements, producing a minimal income, creating your first large army to send out and conquer, and slowly acquiring rebel settlements that would normally consist of that faction while watching your income grow as well as your empire creates a greater feeling of expansion and generally more enjoyable. It also allows you to manage your diplomacy while your empire is still small and that diplomacy will have a more prominent effect on your smaller empire.

Those are more or less my thoughts. I'm sure not everyone feels the same way. If not, then maybe someone could help me edit the factions so that they start with only one or two settlements and the rest rebel besides the other factions and their one or two settlements.

Good point. In that case try the Silvan Elves, Dale, the Dwarves or Isengard.

I think that'd suite your playing style more.

I think I might have to... even though I want to play as one of the other factions, but it starts out with 10 settlements and I immediately fall into debt.

Is there anyway to edit the mod so that each faction only starts with one or two settlements? Or do you have to be adept at modding to do so?

I started a campaign with Free Peoples, got alliances with almost everyone and had over 300,000 in money by turn 50. . I think the best strategy for Free/Harad is to bank on all the territories, build income, and then you can army splurge.

You can edit the files to your liking, and it is not so very hard, it just takes some time. Try asking in the Mod Workshop, the people there will be able to help you.

Play Isengard. You basically start with 1 citadel. (and 2 small towns/villages)

well I think he means that from start on you're heading to fast into war with your neighbours.
most factions have an enemy at their sides (which is enemy from start on). and which is not far.
that's right, you don't have the time which you have in M2TW.

but on the other hand like it is, it is more lorewise. with defined political borders etc.

so I'm a bit torn between gameplay and lore.
but I agree, a bit less starting settlements for a slower start would be cool.
every faction one or two even if it isn't lore-wise.

I've personally always found that it takes a lot longer to get into wars in TATW, because you can run around at the start of the game getting alliances with all the friendly factions, and trade rights with the unfriendly ones. Until you actually expand into a territory that faction wants, they seem to leave you alone. Compare that with vanilla where alliances are barely worth the paper they are written on.

Unless you're Gondor, Rohan, or Dale?

I think alliances are better in TATW because most factions are in states of permanent war with the same factions. Also, alliances have to be canceled by a diplomat, and the AI doesn't have building those on a high priority. It's a lot more fun.
Jon had taken Donal and Benjen’s advice to heart: Sam may be fat and pathetic, but he is still a member of the watch, and one of the few black brothers who isn't a rapist or thief. (out of context, this sounds ridiculously racist)

try Warhammer if i want a relaxing game play i would play stainless or TATW but if i feel like having none stop warfare with smaller territories i play Warhammer.
so if your interested try that one out, but remeber use the cumultative download one(all in one package) some people have experienced a lot of crashes while playing patch to patch download.
the only downside to Warhammer is that you cant expand too much unless you pick certain factions but because of the number of scripts(armies popping around everywhere) there will be a lot of battles, trust me on that. XD
so in the end it depends on your play style, some mods are more "relaxed" than others and others are constantly dynamic to the point to make you sick of it. all great mods regardless.
