    Default Jazz Music

So, I was thinking of exploring this genre of music. It has so many subgenres that it's impossible not to like something. However, I hear all these new terms (hard-bop, free jazz etc) and I don't where to begin from. I have been a rock fan (70s stuff mostly) and I also like the blues (from B.B. King to Stevie Ray Vaughan and some modern blues artists). I also listen to Weather Report, I love their compositions. So are there any experienced Jazz listeners around who could offer some guidance?

    What you should do:
    1. go to a jazz concert
    2. look for a lovely lady
    3. ask for a date
    4. get your jazz education

Still, I think the best way to get the addiction is to go out for a few live concerts.
Live jazz performances in my opinion are much better then the same on a CD...

Oh, and be on the lookout for talented trumpetists. I love trumpets

    some favs:

Satriani is good, Surfing with the Alien is a guitar masterpiece. Vai is too weird for me. He and Buckethead. Uhh. Why did I mention that guy, again? I will check McLaughlin out.

I'll try to give you some more contemporary artists, since I think we are currently in an age where we have a plethora of quality players and releases, but the labels continue to promote the reissues and back-catalogs because it is easier and cheaper to market.

Hiromi Uehara, Steve Coleman, Brian Blade, Steve Picken, Greg Osby, Django Bates, Bill Bruford, Vernon Reid & Masque, Me'shell N'degeocello and the Spirit Music Jamia, The Claudia Quintet, Esbjorn Svennson Trio, Marc Ribot (he's more of a general session and no-wave guitarist, but Painted Desert, a collaboration with Robert Quine and Ikue Mori is nothing short of amazing.)

Some older artists that haven't already been mentioned: Lennie Tristano, Charles Mingus (particularly The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady)

I'll have to give that a listen. Have you heard Electric Masada? Ribot and Ikue Mori are members.

I have. I also had the privilege of watching John Zorn (with his Acoustic Masada, though) live a few years back at the Malta Jazz Festival. If you're a fan of Ribot, and if you haven't already, you might also want to give a listen to Marc Ribot Y Los Cubanos Postizos.

    Many thanks for the link.
