Default My new rig - what im thinking of getting

Heres the comp im thiking of getting, its at the upper limit of my price range with the current £150 off offer.

    http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/pr...pecstab#tabtop

I know it has a pentium, i would prefer an athlon, and im going to get it with the geforce 7800gtx graphics card option.

Is it any good? Can you suggest better for the same price or less?

Take a look in this thread. If I were you I wouldn't buy a Dell, partly becouse it's a Intel CPU and partly becouse you can get the saTake a look in this. If I were you I wouldn't buy a Dell, partly because it's an Intel CPU and partly because you can get the same performance for far less money if you build a rig yourself.

Edit: Those URL tags sure isn't easy.

Im not that good at building ones myself so dont want to risk it. And your links dont work.

EDIT: working now. not sure how that thread is relevant.

EDIT 2: okay, i see how its relevant. I know someone who builds pc's, could you recommend parts for a custom built pc for around £500, maybe a bit higher.

That shows great parts if you're building an own one.
Anyway if you don't want to build the computer itself I suggest you use a price compare site such as http://www.computerprices.co.uk/uk/ or www.pricerunner.co.uk to find the store that has the best prices for the parts that you want. Most stores also offers to build your computer, for a small fee of cource.
Also do you plan on overclock?

Edit: Ok, me and the other gents here will gladly help you. I love window shopping. :original:

No i don't, i don't know enough about computers to be sure i wouldn't f it up. And previous post updated.

Okay, i want a decent comp for around £500 pounds that has a AMD processor and geforce graphics card. It should be able to play games well, and i don't want to overclock. Could you suggest parts to build my own comp, or show me a comp i could buy ready made that meets my needs.

Lol those edits are sure starting to get confusing.

Ok first things first, 1. do you want a single or dual core CPU. I would suggest dual.
2 One or two graphic cards in a cross-fire or SLI solution.

    Motherboard
    Epox EP-9NPA+ Ultra £69
    CPU

    AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+
    £207.12
    or
    AMD Athlon 64 3200+ £112.21
    GPU
    PixelView GeForce 7800 GT 256MB £184.94
    or
    PNY GeForce 7800 GTX £278.89
    RAM
Some 1GB kit with CL at least 2.5 ~ £75

Chassi it's up to your taste really but this one is good
    Antec Sonata II £77.23

    Display
    Hyundai B90A £214.23
or to not break your budget you could re-use your old one.

I assume you can also re-use your old soundcard, keyboard and mice, speakers and Windows.

Now you just need to find the store that has the best overal price for these parts and let build it for you.

And of course other members will soon comment on how lousy these parts it.

ncix.com offers to assemble and test the parts you buy for like $25 (you still have to install your OS)

the place i go to will build it for you for $25 if you buy the parts from them. if you don't buy parts from them then it's like $75. they'll even install OS and drivers and everything, and have a 1 year service warranty. check computer part stores around you and see what they offer

Thanks for the suggestions proximus. I may or may not be reusing the old parts, as at the moment the computer is a family one, and the new one may be again, or be my own one. I have a guy in my village who puts together computer, and software on them, although the software isn't entirely legal.

EDIT: looks like im going to need a new mouse, keyboard, monitor, soundcard etc.

Ok here's most of what you need.
    Vid card
    Geforce 7800GT
    Motherboard
    EPoX EP-9NPA+ Ultra
    CPU
    AMD Athlon 64 3200+
    RAM
    winMOS PC3200 DDR-DIMM 1024MB
    HDD
    Maxtor DiamondMax 10 200GB SATA2 8MB 7200RPM
    Case
Antec Sonata II Miditower, Black w/450W PSU
    Display
    Samsung 17" LCD Syncmaster 710N
    Speakers
    Logitech X-210 2.1-Speakerset
Ok this is 784£ without mouse and keyboard. Also note that the display is good for it's price but to get a display that's really good at gaming you'll need to shell out another 50-ish £.
Ok this was my go, at least I didn't break the budget by THAT much. And I don't think that I forgot any vital part. :original:

EDit: You may want to buy a soundcard, that would be another 20£.

A 450 PSU with that? well, it will probably be fine, as long as the PSU is decent.

The PSU that came with that case is an Antec SmartPower, which is a pretty decet PSU, even though there are better choices. It should be able to handle 1 7800GT.

The PSU will be fine, Antec is a good brand and 450W will be more than enough. A good quality 350W PSU could run thhis thing fine.
Also I knew that I forgot something last night. I didn't pick an optical drive.
Anyway I would recomend this one NEC DVD±RW burner, ND-3550A, 16x, Dual, Black OEM it's the same that I got and it hasn't let me down.

The reason I panicked is because 1) I didnt look close, and thought it was some cheap generic, and 2) I thought he reccomended a GT, which does hog some decent power.
