Default Steam install consolidation thread! (6.4)

My proper install for 6.4 with steam, keep in mind this is a fresh install of mtw2 and kingdoms with windows7/vista. User access control is off, to cut this off please see http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/1...-in-windows-7/ for vista see http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windo...windows-vista/ - not recommended for people who get drunk and start click on banners for free porn.

#1 download 6.3 - Stainless Steel 6.3 Torrent if you don't have a torrent client here is one http://www.utorrent.com

    #2 download 6.4 - Link 1 - Torrent

#3 right click SS6.3.exe and click Run as Administrator - copy and paste this location to install C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\medieval ii total war\mods\SS6.3 (assuming you have steam installed in a default directory on vista/7)

#4 right click SS6.4.exe and click Run as Administrator - copy and paste this location to install C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\medieval ii total war\mods\SS6.3 DO NOT RUN SETUP AFTER INSTALL, TELL INSTALLER YOU DO NOT HAVE STEAM. close everything down and if the game auto runs just close it.

#5 open up windows explorer/My computer find your way to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\medieval ii total war\mods\ you will see all the folders for kingdoms, americas crusades ect ect. Right click on americas, left click rename, rename it to "americas_original".

#6 right click SS6.3, left click rename, rename it to americas

#7 now double click americas folder (if you see a sub folder named ss6.3 something is wrong see #3 and #4), you should see ss_setup.exe in there, double click that, choose your mods, and start date, when you click save and start, kingdoms start screen will come up, close it.

#8 Open up steam, double click Kingdoms, once the kingdoms start screen comes up click play - americas

#9 poof it should work. Should the need to play the original americas campaign arise, please rename the "americas" folder to "SS6.3" and rename "americas_original" to "americas"

I hope this works for everyone because it should, I've tested it on a win7 and an XP machine.

6.4 is a patch for 6.3, so a 6.3 install working with steam but no longer working with 6.4 indicates a failed patch.

For startes let us now what was tried and what failed.

ahh well i can get 6.3 installed and working fine but a 6.4 patch wont work, 2 clean installs, and pointed to the 6.3 directory for installation. can't get her fired up, splash screen for 6.4 comes up, then the game closes right away, other people having the problem as well with no solution. It isn't a UAC issue.

    Installed 6.3 to - C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\medieval ii total war\mods\SS6.3

    Installed 6.4 to - C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\medieval ii total war\mods\SS6.3

    6.3 works, 6.4 does not.

edit** Getting mine working is all great and all but the purpose of this thread was for everyone having steam issues and getting an official response and status rather then digging through endless threads that lead to nowhere.

re edit: Either it is a common problem, then fixing yours will provide the standard path/faq you want, or it isnt but we will get there.
I and i think most of the others on the team can only help indirectly if the steam instrucions fail as we dont have steam kingdoms but any instructions around are from steam users.

What I definitly recommend is installing steam outside of program folders, uac on or not program file folders are treated specially. I use C:\games and C:\steam and rarely get any issues with mods and custom patches.

The splash screen firing up but not the game sounds like a install issue. Post your system log and what settings you chose re submods and campaigns (ss_setup.exe).

Im running 6.4 on steam. Had the same problem with the splash screen crashing. Your sure UAC is off? What rig are you running? Wouldnt happen to be a Alienware MX series would it?

Well after a lot of trail and error i got it working, changing something every reinstall. The only thing i changed on fresh install #18 was not telling the installer i had steam installed when it asked, and also i never ran sssetup right after install. Then it worked like magic!!! woooo and uac is off, and im on an e8400 with an 8800 and 4g of 1066. win7 64. Wonder if i can rar this up and put up a torrent for other steam users :0

Adding " not telling the installer i had steam installed when it asked, and also i never ran sssetup right after install." to the faq would be easier You say you didn't run it right afterwars, but you did run it after that?

P.S: Gracul would be the one to ask, personally I'm not in favor of the idea.
Looks more like something a minipatch or updated instructions could fix.

When I installed it with my steam version it had a fatal error as soon as I hit the mod from the launcher. I let steam check the file integrity and afterwards it worked just fine... v('-')v

Since this has already been necro'ed I may as well post in it. I've done literally all of the above but the game still closes itself with no error after the splash screen. Can anyone help?

Steam can install games in a folder outside "program files", do that and you can follow normal installation instructions and the mod should work fine...It did for me.

Also, said it in another thread about just the same, yeah there are a lot xD, not using the launcher that comes with this mod will prevent you from having some features such as randomized Battle AI.

Steam can also make a "steam shortcut" to the mod launcher and works 100%

PS setting everything to run as admin is still good advice though
