Default Any1 running Shogun 2 from a SSD?

Building a new pc and running Shogun 2 is one of my main reasons for doing so. I'm considering if it's worth splashing out on a SSD. I know they really speed up boot up times on Windows 7 but I was wondering if anybody on these forums has Shogun 2 installed onto a SSD?

I don't have Shogun 2 yet but I imagine as with all TW games the loading times are huge. The load between campaign and battle map always really annoyed me in previous games. What are your experiences? Load times on normal HDDs would be cool as well, and if you post your GPU/CPU specs that would be awesome.

    Thanks!

I do, the loading times never exceed 20s, and I play it from a notebook which is 2 years old now.

specs (wonders why you would need that, since the loading is HD intensive):

    CPU: P7350m
    GPU: AMD 4670m GDDR3
    RAM: 4g DDR2 800mhz
    SSD: Corsair F120

btw never put to sleep a sandforce controlled SSD, you will get a BSOD.

Out of curiosity have you encountered any lockups (everything onsceen freezes) with your SSD? I have an OCZ 180GB Vertex 2 and it's happened twice typically during simultaneous reads and writes. Just curious.

As far as your sleep problems that was primarily limited to Corsair drives. I have no issues with sleep mode with my Sandforce controller.

I'm using the SSD on a completely fanless 0dBa PC but I honestly wouldn't trust my gaming PC to the occasional hiccups I've experienced. Perhaps I got a bad drive, hard to say. It works fine 95% of the time.

yeah I got that, after searching through the forums of corsair I have some unusual lockups, specially when playing lots of flash videos at once, it wont happen very often.

I do think that its the firmware from sandforce that is to blame, I saw a lot of complaints from earlier firmwares and how they fixed some serious stuff on those. My guess would be an illegal operation on the trim and the garbage collection (which is much lower on those controllers as well), and in the end they lock p for the lack of the in built ram. probability that my guess is wrong? high, but that is the only reasonable explanation.

Have your read and writes stabilized in the 200mb/s after some use?

For me there was only 2 options of SSD, one was the V+100 120g and the other was the f120, I end up trusting the wrong controller as it seems.

btw the sleep problems is caused by the power outage that the S3 sleep mode produces, I just hibernate from now on and its fine.

PS: very curious about the 0db machine you got what are the specs?

Actually I never once benched my SSD because I wasn't after speed, it's used on my "music" computer. The only reason I bought it is because I wanted a dead silent PC which noone on Overclock.net said could be done when I started a thread there asking for suggestions a few months ago

I went with an AMD Zacate E350 ASUS E35M1-M PRO motherboard (APU 1.6Ghz. dual core + 6310 DX11 graphics), the OCZ 180GB Vertex 2, 2GB DDR3 1066 RAM (Speed limitation set by the Zacate platform), Seasonic Gold Certified fully modular and fanless 400 watt PSU and the Antec P180 Micro ATX case.

I chose that Antec case because it has a vent with a 200mm fan mount (that I didn't use obviously) directly above the motherboard which allows the heat to rise out of the case off the APU's heatsink. It works quite well and runs completely silent at about 50C, which aint bad considering that's the CPU and GPU temps combined.

If I had a normal case without a large top vent I doubt the heat would ventilate properly and temps would get a bit too high.

I wouldn't just yet. Wait for the Vertex 3 and others like it with nearly double current gen speeds.

It all depends on your concept of value and how much you're willing to pay for speed. Like Mr. MM said, it never exceeds 20 seconds (unless you have a really slow GPU) Personally, I'd be willing to wait.

I bought the SSD due to VM work, not for games, loading times are there for you to smoke a cigarette, read a whole book, and do some yoga to counter balance the effects of the smoking

if you are going to change your notebook for a SB one, then wait for it. If you are not going to get a new notebook, wait for it, the prices of the last version should fall, specially due to use of the 25nm nand, so grab one with reads and writes of about 280m/s. The intel G3 are more affordable than the last model though

I bought mine, simply because there was a need, and I wouldnt notice the difference in speeds.

    @chaobsiroc

that is some tasty pc! you could also have tried to go for a mineral oil cooled solution, however there is a catch with a fan less in this case, it would maintain a certain threshold of temperature after a while

Just as soon as I get some cash to spare, I'm doing this as a project rig. I've always wanted to do it. Sounds awesome.

How big are they ? like from lets say the normal hard drive ?
Their proportions are slightly different, but they are never larger than a standard ATA/IDE HDD. Remember, unless they're external, they still have to fit in a case slot.

they are the usual fare 2.5'' and 9.5mm in height.

You still got that gx660? if so its going to fit perfectly, and I think there is a possibility to get some 1tb, 2.5'' and 12.5mm drives

i ordered parts for my PC just this week and i'm skipping out on the SSD for a bit. might get OCZ's upcoming Vertex 3. right now, even spending 120 dollars on a 60 gig drive is just too painful to do. and this whole, 32nm, 25nm fiasco is a headache i want to avoid. what i'll do to hold me over is run two or three drives in RAID0. sure, it's not the speed of an SSD, but it's better than nothing.

I'm running raid 0 and my load times are really good despite my drives being laptop drives they operate at a good usage.

I'm going to buy an SSD card just to get used to the interface of the thing and see what it can do im going to first install shogun 2 and Napoleon and see if any difference appears simply im then going to install my edition of sony vegas and then install a few HDD intensive apps .
