    Default Food Shortage

Im having problems trying to keep my people well feed. The first thing I do is improve the farms on the provinces, but Im most of the time with 0 surplus. Then when I need to build a army, I go negative and have to deal with riots.

Theres another way to get more food? Trade, diplomacy? Where can I check the relation army x food?

Arnies don't consume Food, only Castles, Markets and a couple of Arts consume Food. Rice Paddies and a couple of Arts increase Food.

Each market upgrade consumes more food that the one below it also, ie, a rice exchange consumes more than a market.

The first thing I do is research the first tech needed for the extra level of farm(Takes about 20 turns easily, even more I think), then go to researching military techs.

A market doesn't consume food AFAIK.

Yes, and the research is totally worth it. The farms produce extra wealth (depending on the fertility, it seems, but around 1300 koku fully-upgraded, that's 325 per city at standard taxes). And, better yet, the surplus food causes all of the cities to grow, so getting them early is best. I usually get sword dojos first, though, since it only adds two turns.

The market does not, but the subsequent upgrades do.

Hmm..its not weird that armies dont consume food?

I didnt know about the markets though..probably they are my real problem.

you also gotta be careful because sometimes when you capture a city from the computer, that city will be consuming more food than it produces. it doens't seem to affect the computer, but as soon as you take it over it affects you.

You have to build carefully. Upgrading your stronghold and markets to rice exchange consumes food. This is why taking over cities can also be problem. I had 6 surplus but after taking 3 cities with castles I went back down to 0.

Note to all of you, research farm upgrades early. And ALWAYS upgrade farms when you take a new province.

Yeah don't build any castles larger than "Stronghold". The only Citadel I have is Kyoto and the only Castle I have is my capital.

By the end of my(Rather failed) Chosokabe campaign I had all farms maxed out, about 2 level 5 castles, 4 level 4 castles and rest(About 5) were level 3. I had a +2 or +3 of food I believe.

Are there also bad harvests events as well? I had not upgraded my 4 provinces for awhile and suddenly I am now a -1 in food. No clue as to the sudden change.

Your farm might be raided, although I think I had one(And I was notified). Went from +3 to -2 for 4 turns, epic rebellions.

I never have food shortages because I barely upgrade many castles. Just research farm improvements and BAM! You make tons of food, after I built Land Consolidation in all my 18 provinces I now have 40 food!

It's better for your clan's economy (which translates into army making) if you were to cut down the number of thos lvl 5 and 4 castles down to 2 or 3 total, and rest at lvl 2 or 3 (the one with 2 building slots so you can build market and religion building for research). +3 extra food might sound nice, but remember every extra food is 1 wealth growth for every single city you own...

lvl 2 castle with just a market is one of the best money maker for mid and late game because it can produce 3 surplus of food. Once you get 10+ cities, that's like 30 wealth growth, and it only goes up as your empire grows.

I always upgrade farms, first thing. In fact I always have in TW games.

Canīt say that I had that problem, but I am also a sissy and play on medium. Could that perhaps be a factor?
