    Default Unnatural lighting and shadows

I don't know, but this is the first TW game that feels somewhat wrong graphically.

The shadows are too extreme, and the light is a strange hue of yellow/brown. The models are shiny like being made from plastic/oiled.

That's because the armour ARE made out of plastic. At least non-synthetic, natural forming "plastic" in the form of lacquer.

Yes, and probably the faces and skin is plastic too. Or they oil themselves before battle.

I have seen many movies from Kurosawa, and none of his samurai exhibited the same cheap gloss as these strange models.

No, I am pretty sure they don't oil themselves. That's why only the armour is glossy.

Are you sure you are looking at the armour and not the fablic worn over the top?

Check the mod section, under visuals.. there is a de-glosser. works well.
