There are two major consequences of realm divide in my opinion:
1) You are forced to plan your entire campaign around an unavoidable event, effectively making all decisions secondary to how and when realm divide will take place.
I know why CA most likely implimented RD. They know after a certain point in most games you can literally steamroll the AI due to your large empire, and human brain. Unfortunately, it doesn't give the challenge that would make me decide to continue the campaign. What it actually does is make me start from turn one planning my entire strategy around the event.
2) All of the variations in units, factions, etc take a huge backseat to starting location. There is literally nothing more important than where you start on the map due to RD.
Not much more that needs to be said here. There is simply no reason, other than role play, to choose anything other than the green faction in Western Japan, or Date in the East, since the starting positions give such a huge advantage for RD. I've started campaigns as Hojo, Oda, Tokugawa, and Mori. Due to their central location, I was at an almost impossible disadvantage due fighting a war on multiple fronts. Not only was it ridiculously difficult, it made the game, and all my planning, completely pointless. It became a lesson in frustration, more than a challening, interesting gaming experience.
I'm not really sure what else to say that hasn't already been said. I think this game mechanism is a huge flaw in the game. It takes away so many options, and forces the player to almost exclusively plan around a single event.![]()
