    Default Nanban Conversion

Is it just me or is the Nanban ports wayyyy to powerful at converting their territory to christianity? 3% per turn? REALLY? You can't stop that short of having two monks and a monastery in there (if the monks don't have any upgrades) which seems a bit... out of whack.

Anyone got any strategies beyond "Put in a monastery and rack that sucker up to 11 with a monk" to keep a population buddhist with a nanban trading post?

I always figured they were intentionally over powered to provide some kind of downside to going with better trade and gunpowder without converting.

Well you don't have to try and convert them to Buddhism. You can just let that province and that province alone be Christian and maintain order through garrisons, Monks and Metsukes. I don't have any trouble with nanban port cities unless I'm conquering it, in which case I just have to be a bit more careful.

Its because Christianity is a disease that spreads too quickly to be contained by any but the most powerful buddhist priests

for southern clans (mori, shimazu) christianity can be good or bad in the overall campaign?

I have yet to see any good thing come out of going christian because of the fact that once you do, you get a diplomacy hit with everyone else on the map who didn't go (so, basically, everyone but the guys who you're trying to eliminate in general).

It just sort of bugs me that this one thing is just so powerful, that not even a church can match the conversion from Shinto>Christian, and yet shinto has no similar benefits etc.

The benefit of remaining shinto is maintaining good diplomacy with the other clans, and avoiding the rebellions that Nanban trade usually brings with it.

Easier access to gunpowder I guess(you don't need to worry about nanban ports giving negative public order)

early guns? i'm thinking of starting a new campaign as the shimazu and converting to christianity with the first daimyo, upgrade the port to quarters and get some cannons before killing him off and converting back to shinto with the next one. feasible?

Also gives you access to building Galleons. But trying to convert your entire population to Christianity and any province you conquer, will be probably the hardest way to play this game.

I want those Galleons so bad.

It's totally within reason. Any place that brings new technology and science as well as material goods and trade will have a very high degree of influence.

Probably spend more money on garrisons and such than it's worth for that.

You also get an increased research rate for the "Chi" tree and increased income (I think).

Imported Matchlock Ashigarus and European Cannons are only available for reasonable prices once you've converted to christianity. Hence, it gives you a) cheap troops and b) rebellions + worse diplomacy.

    It's a tradeoff.

Rebellions are only really a problem if you convert late. If you start early (i.e. Small)you can convert your territories and then begin expanding Christianity beyond your borders.

    so...

Christianity - faster chi research, improved weaponry and trade
Buddhism - less issues with public order, better diplomatic relations for the most part
    Ikko - everyone hates you

Get trade partners established early. I had the tokugawa and some others keep their trade with me after I converted, but the Sagawa and shoni took it as an opportunity to declare on me...I think that just put them over the edge with the "chance of attack" or whatever it's called.

If you are in any way in a position of weakness, you will be bent over the barrel and they won't be gentle.
