    Default No more defensive fortifications?

I forgot the exact term, but when you have a unit hold position in the same spot on the campaign map for a few turns, they develop a small fort that they can defend when attacked. Looks like this is no longer a feature? I've only been there 3-4 turns so perhaps its more.

They are in the game. The problem is that they are bugged to hell, and the same unit that got the option to deploy them will not have that option anymore if you move it by a few feet quite often.

I don't think they're bugged, I think it;s more of a too tight terrain restriction.

I've tested this and all my units could deploy them on the same patch of terrain. But after spreading them out, some couldn't deploy them anymore, yet they could when I moved them back to said piece of land.

It's annoying, since the ground seems to be fairly level.

You mean those defences from ETW? Like the "trenches" and anti-cavalry stakes for example?
I saw them in the demo. Archers had a barrier they could build to protect them from arrows for example. Haven't encountered them yet in the full game though.

Yeah, as mentioned, archers do get them. However, it only seems that they can be deployed in defensive battles which are not against an enemy sallying forth. Not sure if this is a bug or not.

Also, as mentioned, they can only be deployed in certain places, generally extremely flat ground. If there are units in the way, or the 'green boxes' of the defense deployments overlap, or if there are trees/bushes in the way, or on a hill, then normally the option is greyed out.

To work around it, i normally just put archers & some ashigaru on a flat area, next to a hill with a forest/concealed area if available. Then i just use hidden troops in the forest to turn the battle for me & support the archers

I don't think that this is what he means, he seems to be talking about some kind of fortification that is build when an army waits on the same position for a few turns on the campaign map.

I do think it's what he meant.

When in E:TW you were standing still on the campaign map for 2 turns, your stack would get some sort of palisade around it, which meant that defenses like those being discussed could be deployed in battle.

This is exactly what I meant. I'm not sure if people are saying this is possible or not. I'm not talking about defensive things that you can deploy during battle, I'm talking about these palisades that when you defend, you're inside a small fort instead of open field.

    Anyone confirm they are in?

You get to deploy barriers for your archers (and possibly matchlocks) in every field defensive battle. Barriers can't be deployed in woods or if there's even one tree in the way, from my experience.

He's not talking about battle fortifications. He's talking about campaing map forts. The ones that you could build in Rome total war if you had a general in your stack. When they were seiged you could fight in an actual fort instead of an open field battle.

    just some bland barriers.

Also it would be good to have garrisonable buildings like farmhouses and shrines on the battle maps. Though I am happy that sieges are "un-" from Empire/Napoleon. (not perfect though)

The way clans protected provinces during the sengoku jidai was to build small forts around the borders and garrison them with units. They could then be used to gather one big force or bog down invading armies. Look up the Kawanakajima battles. They were all about taking these kinds of forts and building them. They called hill forts yamashiros.

I can confirm the archer barriers stop your own arrows from getting out pretty well and that enemy cavalry clips right though them i.e. enemy cavalry pretend they arent there as if they have a walk-thru-walls cheat on. Enemy infantry has to go around however.

    Waste of time.

OK, one more try. Can anyone tell me what do I need to be able to construct this wooden palisade to protect my ashigaru with muskets? (Yes, on the battlefield, I don't mean forts on campaign map). I'm never seeing such button when I'm deploying troops before battle. Do I need to discover specific bushido tech or develop some kind of general's ability?

Level ground, defending, possibly waiting a turn in the same location and a general, if I;m correct.

And it must also not be a siege.

Also, people are trying to help you, you should be more patienced with them.

Thank you so much! I'm patient, really, I was just getting replies about constructing forts. Anyway, from what you wrote it seems Nagashino-style protection for teppo units is rather a rare possibility.
