Masterless Ronin?

I was looking through the Total War Encyclopaedia and I noticed an entry on Ronin. It says that when a clan is destroyed, there is a chance that master-less ronin may offer their services for any clan that can pay for them, and that when such a chance occurs, a dilemma will appear.

Has anyone seen them or were presented with the option to hire them? I do remember the unit being in the demo (available through the custom battle creator by Mitch). Otherwise, I have never encountered them myself.

I destroyed in my 2 campaigns about 30+ clans already - never got or seen Ronin actualy in game. Guess just a bad luck :-)

I wish Ronin were more easily recruitable, it seems they'd compliment the Hattori quite well who seem to be a sort of state that would encourage less-desirable characters to hide there. Weren't the Ronin seen as dishonorable?

By the standards of the time, yes, but the idea of the Ronin that we know today was largely created after the unification of Japan. AFAIK, this legend reached its height during the Meiji Empire but maintained popularity thanks to Akira Kurosawa and the post-WWII film industry. Like most samurai myths that the general public accepts as fact, the legend of the Ronin was largely created during the Tokugawa shogunate (during which time ronin became an alternative word for thug), a peaceful era responsible highly romanticized (and therefore largely fictional) perceptions of the samurai.

Dishonorable might be a too strong word, but their honour was diffinately stained due to having failed their previous master. Ronins had to live as undesireables and carry a great shame.

I got them in one campaign, I dont know how I got them or why the dilema was offered though. They cost me 1000 and are tougher than normal katana samuri but the unit is smaller so not sure wether they're much better.

This might be tied to a variable, or unseen conditions.

Will be curious to dig into this once we have working PFM/mod tools.

Maybe its one of those random choices you get at times? It could simply have a very low chance of triggering.

Me too, the unit card is all that can be found and its not showing anything of the actual appearance.

Ronin appear, but is very rare. You need to hire them through a decission events that is random.

That never happens for me. Enemy generals either turn into rebels or disappear from the campaign map

I got this in my first campaing.

After the realm divide, i was blitzing through to kyoto and after i destroyed a minor clan a turn after i got message.

I could eaither hire the ronins, a katana unit, or dont, and it implied that if i dident hire them they might come back as a rebellion. Costed 1000

Nothing special though, it was just one unit of 120 men of katana samurai with better stats.

They're supposed to be like a substitute for mercs, but I never get that random event allowing you to recruit them.

BTW, if you recruit them where do they spawn? If it's in the capital then I won't bother (playing as Date so my capital is far far away

They spawn outside the city in the region you get the offer. For me, it was in the city i just destroyed the minor clan. I was playing chokosabe and this in the regions in the upper-west to kyoto.

Ah ok that's nice. Would suck as mercs if you can't use them immediately.
