    Default Battle statistics

I have noticed that in FOE as well as in other mods the defence statistics (as can be found in descr_units.txt) are a bit weird. For example the carthaginian general has more than 30 (if i recall well 31) and the epeirote general only 25. Also the charge in a cavalry unit with shield and spear is equal to the charge with a cavalry with no spear. How is this possible? The rider in the first case has to hold also the shield. Can someone explain this to me? Thanks in advance.

Balancing all the units is a pretty massive task, so probably an oversight, although I cant say for sure as im not the one doing it

Seems that noone is in position to explain why the statistics are a bit insane (in every mod).

Medium shield carthaginian cavalry has the same charge as epeirote cavalry. Or a heavy unit with crested armour has the same defence armour statistics as another one. Is it historical the carthaginians having such a powerfull cavalry, far better than the epeirotes of Pyrrus?

I'm not a unit expert but I'd say that the charge bonus shouldn't be affected by a lance but attack should, the lances wouldn't have made much difference in a charge due to the lack of stirrups meaning that they'd only make a difference in close quarters except for the riders as they might fall off if they were over eager to use them, because they're both horses both capable of roughly the same speed and of course speed is what the cavalry charge is about. If you were to find out what breed the horses were in both areas in question at the time and check muscle structure you could assess for yourself whether or not their charge would be affected. However 2 problems face this; I doubt there are very many historical sources containing this information and even if there were the Carthaginian's hired mercenaries a lot so if it were up to me, for these reasons, I'd have put both charge bonus' at the same because all we can know is that both cavalry units used the same animals. Hope my random intuitions about this topic helped even a little. =D

I see your point and thanks for the analysis. It was realy enlightening.
I just say that carrying a shield without any stirrups and attacking at the same time with the other arm is very difficult, nearly impossible.
I really don't know if the charge bonus has to do with the charge of the horse itself or is a combination of both the horse and the rider. In the case that your point of view is correct, I think that the attack statistics of shielded horse units should be lowered.

charge values are based on the mount (light, medium, heavy) and the type of weapon used. units with a lance have higher charge values than those with an overarm spear or with a sword. there were some cav charge errors in FoE that have been corrected for RTR-VII. primary weapon attack values are kept low so that the charge is more important and to encourage the player to use alt-right click when charging so that the unit will switch to the secondary weapon after the charge bonus runs out.
