Man, living in Japan the last few years, I must say that those 'nonsensical' dates are necessary for Everything! Go to city hall or try to rent an apartment or do taxes and you've got to remember your info in whatever imperial year it was. Even at work all the papers are dated in the imperial calendar. Yaah. Japan has always gotta be special (^_−)−☆
