I have Vista and have a fairly nice computer. Cost 2k 1 1/2 years ago. I can only play Shogun on most medium graphics and some things like water, sky, and terrain on high. Still though when around 150 units, or maybe a little more, come close to the screen I get some noticeable fps loss.

If I upgrade to 7 do you think my fps would get better and I could therefore play with better graphics?

1 - Vista sucks

2 - need more info to give a better answer... such as your gfx card... memory... ect ect... as you can play at medium settings ok you must have a pretty good comp... possibly look to update drivers and make sure you have not other programs running at the same time you play...

1 - Yes Vista does suck. It is a resource hog, which is why I ask if 7 would give me better fps.

2 - Intel Core 2 Quad 3.0 Processor
64 bit Windows Vista
ATI Radeon HD 4870 1gb (I think)
8 GB's of Ram

You should be able to play it on ultra. I turn water, sky, particle effects, shadows to medium, things I don't really want at ultra... everything else is ultra and it runs well.

I have a q9400 @2.66, 4 gigs corsair ram, and a gtx280, windows 7...I don't see how 7 would make the game run better for you.

I just did a re-evaluation of how my graphics should be. I turned shadows off and got nearly a 10 fps increase. Honestly texture quality is on ultra and literally made 0 difference in fps between low and ultra. How weird. Same with sky. Water made a slight difference. I now have most things on high and a few on ultra. My unit size is medium.

Anyway, I am aware that idling Windows Vista takes up about 3 gb's of my ram. I am also aware that 7 is apparently less of a hog when it comes to idling. I would think the same for when it is running full blast on shogun.

Actually Vista is not that bad but yeah windows 7 will be better which is the simple answer.
