The DotS 'menace' - is Stainless Steel's throne under threat?

Dear SS players,

The title says it all: the Dominion of the Sword mod is becoming increasingly popular among Kingdom players (even though it is yet to be released), and one can have a feeling that our beloved Stainless Steel will need to face its toughest challenger to date in the near future. This is further confirmed by the fact that DotS has also been named the Most Promising M2TW Mod at the recent Forum Awards.

I by no means intend to start a flame war here, I'm just curious how you feel about it - will the new kid on the block be a match for the old Master?

I think it's great. SS series IMO has been the reigning mod for so long and while I won't exactly drop it like a good habit (face it, no one drops bad habits). SS has been my favorite mod by far just due to the ease of use of it. Broken Crescent always felt broken to me, the units were great, the map was cool, but the family tree was all over the place, a lot of things were strange to me, it just felt... empty somehow, I suppose like a piece of a greater whole. DoTS though, seems like a natural successor to SS. To answer your basic question at the end there, I think it'll be a match, but not until all the kinks get worked out, nothing beats post beta testing like 10,000 people downloading a mod and trying it out.

I am definately going to try it out. It looks great but we all know SS is pretty solid and is only going to get getting better with time.

Considering that both mods are based on Kingdoms and they target the same audience, the rivalry seems pretty much inevitable...

What's actually the difference between SS and DotS? I've read up on both...but I'm kinda lost as to what's the difference.

the biggest thing I reckon will be DOTS will be a lot slower. its not about conquering the world. some factions victory conditions like Portugal's is to just survive the campaign. its also as historically accurate as possible. as in not just battle mechanics but everything.

Sounds good, I think I will try it out.

But it's a bit pointless to discuss a mod that hasn't even been released yet. Plenty of promising mods never make it, so I'll just take it as it comes.

It might be pointless indeed, but just look at the number of posts, votes and views, and you will learn that the people here are pretty much interested in this. That said, it's only human nature, so why should we deny that?

When i was reading the first post i couldn't help thinking about the Biz empire lol.

Well im defiantly going to play DotS and most likely enjoy it, but maybe the SS team with learn a thing or 2 and come back with a vengeance ill still play SS even if it doesn't

alright, well i'll definitely try it, but as for whether or not it'll match or exceed SS, well i think it's quite likely it'll become as popular as SS.

Ok so we are technically comparing DOS 1.0 to SS 6.4

There will undoubtedly be a good bit of bugs for DOS at first since its a new mod.

I think they will probably have a better unit roster then the current SS roster, but thats about it.

Most people dont think about the battle ai that goes into SS and all of the small things that set it apart from other mods. For instance, the huge amount of people who play this is second only to Tatw by a small margin.

If you have a problem with Stainless Steel there will either be a submod for it or it will be fixed in the next version. And I think that is what sets Stainless Steel apart from any other mod out there. Very supportive moderators and they are willing to listen and incorporate the players ideas.

What is Tatw? As for the rest of the post, wow. I'd give most things a try, if I don't like them, I don't play them. The battle system ai for SS is good, but like anything there's room for improvement... within hardcoding I suppose, not that I know anything about scripting A.I., but the work the DoTS team has done is nothing to take at a whim or so casual. There's a lot that went into it, A LOT.

I really expect some fireworks and hope to see Poland rooster accurate and not f.....you know what i meant!
