In Medieval 2 there were special events and gameplay elements that could really add to a diversity of a campaign, change the gameplay significantly and keep interest in a single campaign for a longer period of time. To name a few:
1. Mongol Invasion
2. Timurid Invasion
3. Crusades
4. Jihads
5. Gunpowder invention
6. Pope diplomacy (Christian factions)
7. Discovering of new world (Kingdoms)
8. Teutonic order invasion (kingdoms)
What do we have in Shogun 2 in that matter? So far I am near the end of my first short campaign and I didnt noticed anything that special.
