    Default Thoughts on war

    So, good chums.
What are your opinions on war, is it right? Wrong? Immoral or just plain stupid.
Maybe your in favour of war and would like to express that.

I for one am all for war, if it keeps a country safe (and in some cases) the military power of a country keeps invaders away, then why not have war? Why not fight?......After all, it is human nature.

War is delightful to those who have had no experience of it.
    - Desiderius Erasmus

Saying that you're all for war and that it's just great while you live in West Europe and are younger than thirty years old is ridiculous. What you can do however is try and form an objective view of what war is. And it doesn't seem to be anything more than simply one of many forms in which human disagreement expresses itself, even if it's the most violent one.

War is usually always bad on short term, but the long term effects of it can't be underestimated. The same is true for any fight or argument, where the initial bruise and sore of the conflict is ultimately overshadowed by the lifetime of changes it brought about.
I have approximate answers and possible beliefs, and different degrees of certainty about different things, but I’m not absolutely sure of anything, and many things I don’t know anything about. But I don’t have to know an answer. I don’t feel frightened by not knowing.

Yeah sure, he said that. But that on its own a gross mis-interpretation of his views, one that he didn't even hold to be true. You've got to put that quote in context - it was part of a dialectical analysis of the nature of war, an antithesis to an earlier thesis that war was combat between two people (zweikampf) on a larger scale.

So the problem there is that both these views ring true. War can be an extension of politics, a la:

but at the very same time it's also a continuation of the brutal struggle for survival between two people, each attempting to physically break the other:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

The synthesis that he reaches is that war isn't just a continuation of politics, and it's isn't nothing more than a duel on a larger scale. Instead he thought that it was a fascinating trinity 'of a dynamic, inherently unstable interaction of the forces of violent emotion, chance, and rational calculation'. [see this interpretation.] The bloke was well aware of how horrible, de-humanising and pointless war is.

My own opinion is that war is a result of human psychology and how we function as social groups. I don't think that violence in itself is particularly wrong, but none the less it should be discouraged as much as possible to ensure social harmony.
The use of violence to achieve political aims is understandable, and indeed governments should have the capability to wage it if needs be, but at the same time their armed forces should recognise that they are a tool of the will of the people and the cultural virtues that they believe in, not of the particular government.

if it's a "get in, get out job", like the war in iraq and Afghanistan was meet to be and hopefully what Libya will be. Then it can be a good thing. But in my view a war any were that loses it's end goal or takes a long time to get done is a bad war.

War is responsible for a large percentage of technological discovery and advancement throughout human history, Without it i don't think we would be where we are today so it definitely has it's positives.

And on the off chance that hostile UFO's show up at least we'll be experienced and trained at whooping ass

Watch Battle: LA! The Marines hand the aliens a big can of whoop-ass!

How many Einsteins and Mozarts have been murdered since Roe v. Wade? And the Dark Ages came about because of the fall of the Roman Empire ...

I have not seen this movie but I have heard it plays up to typical stereotypes of the military (not always in a flattering way).

    PhilipO'Hayda,

I think he is trying to say that the Yanks have this propensity to want what others have and they don't.

War is sometimes inevitable and necessary, but under no circumstance is it a good thing. War is horrible, and while it seems to be this event full of heroism and glory in reality it's the worst possible thing to happen on the Earth. Millions of people being forced to murder, be murdered, etc. etc. the evils of war are endless.

I do agree sometimes it has to happen, but in my opinion if I was in a position of power I would try to spend all options for peaceful resolutions before having to resort to war. It's the world's greatest evil.

But seriously, no. If we hadnt had wars we wouldnt be nearly as advanced as we are now as much of the everyday technology we use now was designed for the purpose of war.

If we didn't have wars, less people would die, meaning more people to research such technological advances.

How many Einsteins have died due to war? How many Kipling's? Gandhi's? Wright Brothers? Oh look, we didn't need war to discover how to fly, now did we?

And what about the Dark Ages? Those came about due to war, and humanity took a giant leap backwards.

, how many people live in all of Africa and how much have they discovered?

now look at Britain a place always at war and like at what they discovered?

Hilariously bad example considering most African countries are also always at war.

    Senex Civis,

Perhaps that is the case because we have wars but think on it that if there were no wars how much could be diverted into research in more important fields such as keeping people alive, fed and healthy. Who can really tell what science would not have discovered or invented if war wasn't around?
