Default Less shiny/glossy units (V4 released for latest patch!)

    Version 4 has been released!

    Changes in V4:
-Updated to work correctly with the latest patch

    DOWNLOAD HERE:
    http://www.gamefront.com/files/20321..._lessgloss.rar

    Changes in V3:

    - Removed gloss frome some gloves
    - Removed gloss from some of the ropes/straps around samurai's necks (rope shouldn't shine like metal)
    - Removed gloss from monks robes
    - reduced the gloss on the circular markings on the ashigaru, they still glow more than the armour since they're brighter than it on most factions, but they have the same gloss as the rest of the armour now, so they shouldn't look as much light bright spotlights.
    - Possibly some other changes

Install it by dropping it in your Data-folder, no activation by script necessary anymore, if you had the mod-old version, remove the old line from your user.script-file, otherwise the game will crash on startup.

    Changes in V2:

    - Reduced the gloss on many more things (horses, some more cloth etc. etc.)
    - In the last version, the cloth became a lot darker, it's not as dark anymore (I think), but it's still not all shiny.

Well, I'm not the only one who thought the units where way to shiny in the game, especially the clothes, they looked rather.. plastic (the awful colours on some of the factions still makes them look plastic though, but trust me, I'll get to that as soon as it's possible to assign custom textures to specific factions).

Anyway, I made this quick fix, this should make the units a lot less shiny and glossy, I haven't tested it much though, so there might be some problems. This removes the gloss pretty much altogether on much of the cloth on the units, and reduces the gloss on the armour. Haven't taken any screenshots, but it's easy to add/remove, so just try it out!

might take some screenshots later The difference isn't that big really, everything (especially the cloth) is just a lot less shiny.

This is great news! I noticed there are a few gloss-files, but I noticed in the main files there are several other gloss-files as well. Will you do the rest as well, or ?

Hm, I THINK these should fix all the units in battles, (maybe not horses though). The other gloss files might be for characters on the campaign-map etc.?

This is funny because earlier I was playing as the Green clan in custom, and couldn't shake the feeling that the soldiers looked like toy plastic soldiers!

Have tried it now, and it does indeed reduce a lot of the gloss a lot There are some really shiny items still though, like the head-wear and some armours. Are you thinking about releasing a totally matte version as well perhaps, removing the shine all-together? Hehe. I have no idea how to do graphics, if I knew I would Great work though!

Here are some screens I took. I'm not sure if it's working or not, some of the cloth still looks glossy.

I think they look a bit better - can you also get rid of the gloss on the horses? That's worse than the infantry. Anyone had any problems after installing this mod?

Hm, that's not what it looks like for me. Are you sure you have installed it correctly by adding it to your scripts etc.?

About glossy horses and other things, I'm gonna look into it more and remove a lot more gloss from horses and other cloth etc. Might do a totally matte version aswell.

Edit: here's how they look for me. Although they have almost some sort of "anti-gloss" feeling to them, some strange shadows. This doesn't seem to be present on custom textures though (yeah, I'm working on something, retexturing all major factions), but together with the in game-colouring of units it looks a bit strange. Still, better than to have them all shiny.

New version is up, I just noticed that I should have removed the gloss more on the Monks robes though, but I'll wait for more feedback and more things to fix before I put another version up.

It seems like the gloss, as bad as it is gives the impression the units are detailed. From what i see in your screens looks a little like a modded rome total war, but with gloss it looks like a modern game.

Dont get me wrong, i dont agree gloss should replace good texture work but until we get some unit texture mods i dont think the gloss should be removed, from what i can see in your screenshots.
Or are your graphics settings low?

Great mod, the units look alot better, especially since the game is lacking AA. Just one question, do graphics mods like this affect multiplayer?

I'm not sure really, it might, but it's easy to deactivate if that's the case.

And about the units looking less detailed without the gloss, I don't really think they do, just that they look less plastic. And I'm running the game on mostly high settings, texture and unit detail are on high at least.

I'm running everything on ultra, and I agree with you it doesn't lose detail at all. But by Thor's hammer, at least now you feel you're commanding real troops

Next thing for someone to do is the battlefields, because they really need work. I actually had more battle-feel in the MTW2 fields than Shogon 2, and I think that may be because of colouring as well. There's really something off with the colours of Shogun 2 all-together, imho.

Oh, and for those that don't want to mess around with adding it to your script could just save the file again as 'Movie' instead of 'Mod', and it will be forced to work as long as you don't have any other mods that interfere with the files inside. But at this point, I doubt anyone does
