Turn all your graphics settings to low? Turn off all the shading ad fancy textures? Reduce unit size, these all seems much easier to do than making it so you always fight battles in the desert.

    To Technical Help
You can but it's very lengthy and a tedious task. You have to modify the map_ground_types.tga file.
Best to compromise with your graphics settings instead.

Alps and Black Forest may lag, anyway, but lowering your graphics options is easier than modding the game for it.

Forests cause insane lag, especially if your AF is high.

Anyway, deserts don't lag because the GPU has less to process, as well as the CPU. It's just an open flat area with nothing in it. It free's up an insane amount of resources, allowing for frame rates to exceed 100+ at times.

Or you could just play Egypt and autoresolve anything in a non-desert.
Jon had taken Donal and Benjen’s advice to heart: Sam may be fat and pathetic, but he is still a member of the watch, and one of the few black brothers who isn't a rapist or thief. (out of context, this sounds ridiculously racist)

You could play kingdoms, i find kingdoms runs better than orignal m2tw anyway. You could play the crusade version.
