Default ati 800xt 256mb agp...if you have one please speak up

    Hello all,

As you can probably tell I'm asking for opinions of this card. I have a 9800 pro now, and was wondering what this community thinks of this card. Hopefully I hear from those of you who bought one, but I'll take educated opinions.

my specs are good except for video (need new one for MTW2 and Oblivion)

    3 gig p4, 1024 ram, Asus MB 128mb 9800 pro.

I found it online for $281. thanks

    This belongs in the Basement.
And in that pricerange I would go for an Geforce 7800GT 256MB, if you have PCI-E that is. Otherwise a Geforce 7800GS is a good choice. Both can be find for under 300$

I have AGP and do also consider upgrading to the X800XT. The X850 still costs too much. On the other hand..it seems like the X850 will be the last top model for AGP, and as I am not going to change my PC anytime soon, that would be an option for me to consider.

So I would also be interested on what you think of the X800XT

Ok the x800XT is a good if somewhat aging card. It's only SM2.b and don't support "real" HDR, as opposed to Valves fake HDR. For above mentioned reasons I would go for a 6800GS it’s shader model 3 and supports HDR. It’ll be far better in Oblivion than a x800XT wich will use a lot of SM3 effects. And it's fairly cheap as well, 209$ here

    Sorry for the wrong forum
    Thanks for the info.

I went on to look at your suggestions and I think th 6800gs 256mb might be the way to go. It's got 3.0 and the price seems doable. The 800xt seems outdated for the price like you said. I dont want to upgrade my power supply (350watt) so 7800's are out of the question. Are any of you running a 6800 gs with 350 watts? Hows the noise factor? I'll read more up on it when I get home and make a descision.....maybe.

The 6800 GS AGP isn't that good, because its clock is much much lower. I would go for a 7800GS for $299 at newegg, but compared to its PCI-E counter parts you are basically being riped off. PCI-E is getting to be much much cheaper than AGP cards now.

If you read my first post you'll see that the 7800GS was my first suggestion as well.

thanks for the suggestions and links.

I am going to wait awhile because the cost of AGP card (a dying technology) is ridiculous! Why do they cost more than PCIE cards? Sure, you can buy refurbished and oem cards at a discount, but my sound card is oem and I cant update the drivers for that to save my life. Don't want to go down that road again.

You would think that AGP cards costs would go down. I'm not spending a dime til' that happens. My 9800 pro 128mb is going to have to last a little longer. It's still a good card. Oblivion on med settings isnt so bad.

I doubt they will drop much in price in the nearest future, ATI and NVIDIA wants us to make the switch toPCI-E. It’s a wonder they even release new AGP cards IMHO.

Because there is still a very large AGP market that can be tapped. Forcing consumers to essentially buy a new rig for the sake of upgrading their vid card is not a very popular move if you ask me - and I am sure the big wigs at ATI and nVidia see it the same way.

I'm not as sure as you seem to be, I mean if ATI and NVIDIA really were interested in a continued life of the AGP platform. How come that ATA hasn't released any new high end AGP card at all? Or why NVIDIAS 7800GS are so much under clocked comparing to the PCI-E 7800GT?

Yes, you guys are right. Too bad, I want a top of the line AGP card so my computer can at least die fighting, but unless I settle, I just can't see paying that much. The price will drop eventually and I'll be there circling overhead to scavange whats left. I wish I had parents to buy me the stuff I dont need

You will have no problems updating drivers for that 6800GT, and btw 6800GT are still extremely good cards. I would recommend you to just buy that.
