    Default Diplomacy

Do any of you use the diplomacy console "cheat" to get around the AI's limitations when it comes to diplomacy?

    for example:

I have been playing as the Syracusans in one of my personal RTR mods. It's about 304 BC, I have brought Carthage to her knees. All she has left is Utic (her capital), parts of Iberia and Sardinia. What I want to do is make peace, so I could move off to the east and get involved in the Diadochoi wars, enter the AI.

Do you feel it is a cheating to give back all you have conquered in Africa (after destroying the appropriate building) in exchange for peace, and forcing the AI to accept it?

This has really been a great campaign so far, Carthage, Numidia, the Samnites, and the Ptolemaioi are all ganging up on me at the moment.

I, persoannly, wouldn't call that cheating, since you are giving them such good terms. I mean, if it suits your game better to let them live than crush them, I think you should use all means nescessary in order to continue to enjoy the game.

No, I don't think it's cheating but I personally would never give back provinces or cities that I've conquered from them. Remember, the spoils belong to the victors.

I wanted to use this to force a protectorate. For example, giving the ex Carthaginian provinces to Numidia in exchange for becoming a protectorate, but that is a little questionable. The stupid AI wouldn't even take it for a cease fire! LMAO

If you give away so many rich provinces, it should probably be for a protectorate.

Unfortunately, I don't. I was thinking to do it thru a script.

I am on vacation next week, so I will try to get it done then.

On a site note, I got tired of trying to make peace with Cathage & Numidia, and just kept Africa in the Syracusan Empire LOL...I like those Elephants too much.

I don't think it is a cheat... anyway, I would like to see some new options on diplomacy table. It realy gets annoing to try a peaceful solution and see a devastated enimy refuse it's last hope! Still, sometimes I find myself the most powerful empire on earth and, at the same time, incapable of interfering with the war among tow other emperes, diplomacy should allow us to demand peace and to force it, of not obeyed!

This is an idea I would like CA to put in practice! Dont you think so!

Has anyone tried using ancillaries to influence diplomacy? Perhaps something that gives an enormous bonus to negotiation?

I thought I read somewere that you could go as high as +60?

  13. #13

    Default diplomacy indeed

I agree it is not a cheat. Besides, I would like to be capable of influenciating two other empires wich are at war, for example, force peace or force war

I just tested a diplomat with a +60 negotiation ancillary, and it WORKED!!!

On the first turn of the test, Carthage became my protectorate.

Can we have a trigger that just gives ancillaries to the human player?

You should be able to force an ai faction to attack another faction with this, but I don't think making peace will be possible.

I don't think this will be a cure all for diplomacy. The AI won't accept everything you offer, but it seems to make you less odious to the AI.

This morning I was able to get Carthage to accept a protectorate, and hand over Lilybaeum for 5,000/15 turns tribute.

I was unable to get them to attack Numidia. I imagine if you offer alot of cash they may be more willing. Will have to try this later.

A potential problem with this method, is what will the AI do with a super diplomat like this?

Did a little more testing. As Syracuse I took Hadrumentum, Carthago, and Utica (city west of Carthage?). After this I was able to get a cease fire with Carthage (without buying them off), and an alliance with Numidia. Both were impossible in my previous campaigns.

Yes, diplomacy is one of RTW's weakest areas. It really angers me to have a civilization down to 2-3 territories, with a single half-stack army to defend against my incoming 4 legions, only to have the demand a peace settlement of <instert rediculous sum here> gold and every single territory I've taken from them. I mean, who are they fooling?! They got some secret army I don't know about? This especially sux because I plan on eventually taking on the Seleucid Empire, but I don't want to conqure them entirely, as that would seriously upset my balance (I wanna conqure the area that Rome held at its height.) If they refuse a ceasfire or give rediculous terms....it's gonna be a long war.

BTW, how do I get my diplomat's diplomacy to 60+? So I can actually make sure I can demand tons of tribute after I totally pwn a nation. (like the Iberians, who have finally forced me to invade due to their constant practice of making 2-3 large armies, attacking me, me destroying them, making peace, then repeating)

I'm in the same situation with Numidia, they invade me with 4 full stacks, as soon as they rebuild them (they really want Thapsus and Leptis Magna). This time it was while Agathocles (grandson of The Agathokles of Syracuse) was conquering Egypt. I am besieging Memphis, the last hold out in the Nile valley, and it's full of elephants. It's pretty realistic, there should be constant pressure from Numidians.

This then triggers a full scale Carthaginian counter offensive, so I have to divert my Sikeloi Skirmishers, Sikeliotai Hoplitai and Sikeliotai Gastraphetes, destined for Egypt, to reinforce Africa. Agathocles will have to rely on mercenaries....

    It is a great campaign....

The quick and dirty way to do it would be to edit the export_descr_ancillaries.txt. I changed foreign_dignitary and foreign_captive to negotiation 60. All you have to do is end your turn in a foreign or barbarian land to trigger them.

Unfortunately, it won't take affect until you start a new campaign.

Why will it not take effect until a new campaign? Couldn't you just get a brand new diplomat and do it then?

I was continuing my old campaign, and a diplomat that got the ancillary didn't get the new attibutes. I think their influence is maxed out when it is working, but I could be wrong. Try testing it.
