I found Rome a city of bricks and left it a city of marble.
Byzantine Empire should have a system like that too .
Because its little weird when some young (just because he is adopted by the Emperor ) assface becomes heir when there are other way more prominent Byz nobles .
Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both.

No family tree = realistic? Riiiight. Sons never inherited the throne or whatever you want to call it.

Exactly, the territory of the Teutonic Knights endured as a monastic state until after the Reformation, when the Grand Master of that era (late 1500s?) converted to Protestantism and established his dynasty as the hereditary rulers of Brandenberg-Prussia...etc. etc.. So for this time period, the Teutonic Knights are accurately represented as family-treeless faction that ran itself much like any other monastic entity; emphasizing merit and ability over heredity. Bloodlines were important, and nobles from Germany and even Poland held the highest offices. They probably weren't perfectly chaste, and many most likely had children out of wedlock, and those children might have even inherited some lands or titles through round-about ways, but they would not have been able to inherit any authority within the Teutonic Order without being a member.
