    Default Shogun 2 vs Shogun

I'm not sure if this thread's been done yet - if so, please merge this one with it mods.

So, anyway. I never played the original Shogun, so to those of you who did and have been waiting eleven years for the sequel, how does it stack up?

Seems that unit types are rather limited in Shogun 2 - was it so in Shogun? That's just one example of things that may or may not have been different. So, what's the best game (forget the graphics/animations) - Shogun or Shogun 2?

The amount of units in Shogun 1 is limited as well. I played Shogun 1 myself when it came out, and it was awesome. Recently I reinstalled it and gave it another shot. Now that I have played Shogun 2, it is easy for me to say that Shogun 2 is superior to Shogun 1 in every aspect.

I think most of the current Shogun 1 hype is based on nostalgics.

    Shogun 2, no question.

Not surprising really, given the fact that the original is nearing 11 years old.

I agree everything I liked about shogun is back in the game and with the unit slowing down mod ( a god sent even if it slows cavalry too ) it's just as good, what makes it better is the tcampaign map for me and the rpg factors.

In gameplay It was primitive, perhaps the AI was better but that was due ro the limited number on unit in the Battle map and the risk style map.

One of the reasons I asked is because when Medieval II first came out, I remember a lot of people saying they preferred the first game.

Still do...m2 was good, but it never really captured the EPIC feel of MTW for me..

S2 imo is unquestionably better in every single department than shogun.

I discovered forums only during RTW but I remembered when RTW released people are praising MTW and condemning RTW. When M2TW was released (BI doesn't count) people are condemning M2TW while praising RTW as the perfect game.

Then when ETW was released you all know the story where people are praising M2TW and forgetting all the horros stories about bugs etc.

MTW was epic at that time. I mean compared to AOE....

oh i remeber all too well

RTW really was bad on release though..understandable i guess as it was a brand new..well..everything.
M2TW had its fair share of bugs too, but was much better. However it never quite felt the same way MTW had to me.

I'd guess most of the reason why some prefer Shogun 1 to 2 is nostalgia and the excitement of playing such a revolutionary game.

I've come to realize that as I've gotten older, I have become less impressed with new Total Wars in part simply because after playing the earlier TW's there is not the same feel of revolutionary excitement to be playing a game with epic battles with thousands of men on the battlefield. For me, Rome was the first TW game I played, and I know for a fact I will never recapture the sense of wonder I experienced when I started a battle and instead of the 60 man battles you see in traditional RTS games, there were two massive armies squaring off against each other. It was simply something I had never experienced before, and now that I've experienced it with all of the other TW games, of course I am not going to feel that same sense of wonder all over again.

Of course, it's easier to justify why you prefer an earlier game through practical things like gameplay than it is to admit that you are getting older and aren't as excited anymore about the same things you used to love, so not everyone would admit this.

I still loved the first one, but I REALLY LOVE SHOGUN 2!!! But I'll always love them both equally! Even more after the DX11 patch comes out!

I love Shogun 1, and still play it, because:

1- It is strategy simplified, into rock-paper-scissors style combat. S2TW goes back to this and this is a good thing.

2- I still love the graphics. What others see as primitive, I see as these wonderful, impressionistic vistas. It has aged VERY well. And it is still very, very playable, even in light of its sequel. The colours, the shades and tones, the incidental ambient music - it's all beautiful.

3- Moving the wooden pieces on the strat map made you feel like a daimyo in a throne room, which the later games lost. Again I'm glad S2TW goes back to this with the new map, which turns into terrain as you discover it.

EDIT: Oh, and 4- The dead bodies don't frickin' disappear! Snap. Win goes to Shogun 1 on that one. I still remember playing the demo back in 2000 when it came with PC Gamer, bringing the camera over a hill and seeing before me the vast plains covered in hundreds of dead and it felt like I was directing a Kurosawa movie, it was so filmic and epic.

Its fairly obvious that Shogun 2 would be a better game since CA have had ten years experience in making total war games. But to compare things out of the context of the time does little good. Who was smarter Einstein or Newton? Einstein's view of the universe might be more correct, but without Newton's work would he ever have been able to come up with it?

Shogun 2 is the better game, but will it change RTS games in the way Shogun did? Highly unlikely.

Well, the first Shogun was the first ever TW game wasn't it - it was a revolutionary concept at the time. And to be fair, it's a concept that has stood the test of time, with various changes here and there.
