Default Med. 1 Gold Edition Battle Graphic Problem

I'm sorry if this had been asked already, I have looked a few pages ahead, and didn't see a similar topic, hopefully I didn't look over it.

Has anyone been able to run Medieval Total War Gold Edition with a new graphics card? The campaign works fine, but when I start a battle, the screen just flickers black. I can see the terrain and unit cards, but my mouse leaves a copied trail of itself, and the only way to get out of the game is to ctrl-alt-delete. When I do that, I get one of these two messeges:

    DDER_SURFACELOST
    DDER_NODIRECTDRAWHW

I have an Nvidia 9800 GTX+. I have attempted to contact tech support for both the game and the card, but so far, I've only received the usual update drivers, reinstall, sorry, we don't know what to do feedback. I was wondering if anyone in the same boat has been able to make this work? If anybody needs to see any other comp. info, I'll post it, but believe me, my computer is high-end, and is far beyond the specs.

EDIT: Also, Shogun: Total War Gold Edition is displaying invisible troops.

Unfortunately, it's impossible to make battles work properly on the GF 8XXX and 9XXX series gfx cards. Even if you resolve flickering/black screen problem (video codecs related) you'll still be unable to command your units during battle due to mouse issue. AFAIK there is no solution for this.

Stazi is right - the only workaround with Shogun is to try software rendering, but that will be slow and look terrible.

Don't know if anybody is still checking this, but in case anybody was having the same problem as me, and many of you have probably already figured this out, but just in case: The games work perfectly on 7 series cards, and I've noticed a lot of people saying how they were going to try to find an old computer just to play these games, but if you have an old video card lying around, just pop that in when you want to play. Easier said than done, I know, if you don't hae NVidia, or other universal-patch cards, but I figured I'd add my two cents!
