Re: Find mons
I don't think every family had crests--only samurai families. IIRC, the peasantry wasn't even allowed family names until well into the Edo period--though I could be confusing my naming histories here, it's been a long time. So unless you're from an old samurai family, odds are you don't have a crest.
I would recommend simply googling it. Just type in whatever your family name is (or was, if it's changed) in google.co.jp along with the kanji for mon, and then click the images tab. I'm sure the Japanese have plenty of resources for this kind of thing. Hell, even just typing "what is my family crest" (私の紋わ何ですか?)or something into google (in Japanese) would probably be more than sufficient.
Unless, of course, you're an immigrant (or the child of immigrants) and don't have the strongest Japanese language skills. That's understandable. If that's the case, all I can really do is give you some different kanji for "crest," which you can stick on to your family name in a search. Assuming of course you know the kanji for your name, or can ask your parents/relatives for it.
紋
紋章
紋所
家紋
I'm hardly an expert, and I'm certain eventually someone far more knowledgeable than I will post some far superior advice, but until then, I hope this helps.

You will need birth records. This is much easier in Christian lands since the local churches wrote it down. I have no idea if they did they same thing during the Edo period. Other than that you will have to ask your grandparents if they can tell you something about their grandparents etc.
You're Japanese? If you live in Japan then try asking for some kind of local population registry etc.
