How to counter Trolls and Mumakill

Yes I know I misspelled mumakill but that's beside the point.

As many people know, Trolls and Mumakill can be VERY hard to kill. I once had 1 Troll battalion take out 5 and a 1/2 battalions(3 gondor archers, 1 gondor pikemen battalion, one swords militia and it heavily damaged my general's bodyguard) single handedly! What is their counter? Thanks


PS: The reason this is not in the simple questions thread is that I'm sure that many people have different strategies and I don't want to clog up that thread with all the answers
PS: I know it is similar to the post below. I didn't want to hijack it with how to kill a troll Q&As.

Trolls: Archers, 4 batallions of good archers can handle easily 12 trolls, or atleast make them to fall very quickly in melee.

Mumaks: Catapults, only way to get rid of them fast enough so they dont have time to kill your troops with their sniper-archers. Also javelins work well, but not all factions have access to them.

I always wonder why people worry so much about trolls and mumakils (there are plenty of posts telling how to easily counter them). Massed enemy cavalry is such a more dangerous enemy. Or lots of enemy archers. And massed troll catapults worst of all.

Trolls:
- AP units
- Javelins
- Lucky ballista or catapult shot
- Massed infantry around them
- Cavalry charge

Mumaks
- Javelins
- Ballista or catapult

Interestingly enough, I find that Mumakil are the most deadly when assaulting a city - those snipers of theirs can take out an entire unit of wall-defenders easily, while the close quarters mean that one swipe of a mumaks trunk kills half a battalion of defenders.

They got equally or even higher accuracy, while on a moving shaking huge platform.
When the other archers are on a ground, or at least a smoother moving mount.

after extensive testing I found:

Ballistas hit nothing, ever

Archers kill 1 at most from a distance, can do alot of damage upclose though, but is unreliable

1 axemen + 1 sword militia = 100 casualties, all trolls dead (using two axemen yields same results )

Marines kill 1 with javelins at most, even when not stopping to avoid friendly fire

I mix and match and did many scenarios, maps, and unit combos, avoiding any kind of human error and taking into accound what does damage and what made the kills, what the Ai did (stupid walking around or charing makes a difference) and etc (for an hour lol)

elite troops will do their job obviously, but if you dont want to throw away money on 100 dead elites to take down a bloody troll squad, an axemen and militia will do the job bloody quick, and can be quikly resupplied

It depends on what faction you are, if your the elves then archers are the way to go, and if your gondor or dale some special units like ithilian rangers, besides that, catapults or anything like it, you could also just get close and let your men stab em to death. *javalins work well to but only from very close range and a little to close i think*
and mumakills catapults *archers too but are less effective and javalins have the same problem as with the trolls*

About trolls there is even a sticky in "guides resources an art" where you will find a lot of tips. Some of this stuff also works on trolls. An important difference is that mumakil are much easier to hit with artillery, catapults work well. Also contrary to trolls they can run amok - so you can try flaming arrows or artillery missiles.

quite funny, had it once when i started playing TATW for the first time and i was still full of enthusiasm about this great mod (i still am) that i encountered a couple of mumakil groups when defending a recently conquered city from Harad when playing as Gondor.
They made a hole in the wall and i thought meh, those mumakil are way to big to fit in that hole but as it turned out when i positioned most of my troops around the hole and on the route to the town center, they came rambling through the wall and i was like -_- wtf dude!

I use to defeat Trolls with high-damage swordsmen
Cavalgy charges are helpfull , but after charge , they start to die very quickly ...
Archers are useless
