Depends on what the ol' constitution says i suppose.. only read it once.. i think thats pretty good for someone coming from Scotland, bet not many Americans have tried to fathom the UK constitution.. Anyway you should read that if youre not sure about the presidents role.

Hmm though, a 'conquest to conquer the middle east' eh.. that's news to me, even if it does sound kind of catchy

Plus Bush has some clever people on his side working to set up things like the Iraq war and the surveillance...

Cheney worked in the intelligence offices of the govt. for nearly 30 years!

Plus having a majority in every part of the govt doesn't hurt, either... lol.

On paper at least, he have vitually no power. He have no power of declaring war, making treaties etc. The only thing that he can do is to veto and to appoint people to offices when those clear up.

Presidents of old, (Before WW1) really weren't that powerful, except for lincoln, who used many methods unconstitutional and illegal at the time. Things really expanded with FDR though, the depression hit, and congress really had no idea what to do, so they basically voluntarily gave power to the president. FDR spent the rest of his four terms increasing presidential power. They have had the same amount of power since then, just some presidents use it more than others. I would say Bush uses his power more than any president since FDR.

Bush only has as much power as the people he can fire, or force into retirement. If he can fire you for disagreeing, or whatever, then that area he has power over. This doesn't include many offices so i'd say he has next to no power.

He can change the cabinent, so long as it doesn't **** off the party, or fire generals, which he has fired people who disagreed with how to attack iraq. Even still they can't "fire" people they have to suggest "retirement".

Also he can put people like Justices on the supreme court, however that doesn't mean they will listen to him.

People definately overrate how much power bush, or whoever, has. Also if a president oversteps some bounds it seriously pisses people off, like with executive orders. Which i think should be made illegal as its undemocratic.

Actually Andrew Jackson was the strongest president in American history. So strong he ignored the supreme court and congress on at least one occasion (on the Cherokee Indians), but was too powerful to be impeached. He was so powerful an entire political party was started to oppose him, the Whigs...

He is a President in his second and final term who is still tied to a long, costly, unpopular and mostly unsuccessful war. e.g. not too powerful.
