I have managed to fix this problem. For the original post please see the spoiler below:

Hello Everyone,
I'm having a problem. I recently downloaded this mod again, as i used to play it a while ago. I've begun a new campaign as Gondor, and upon assaulting West Osgiliath, i get a CTD and the error message:
"15:33:16.040 [system.rpt] [error] Medieval 2: Total War encountered an unspecified error and will now exit."
I have seen that there are others with this same problem, but noone seems to have given a solution. Here is the end of the log file:
The full log is extremely long so im unable to post it here, if its needed you'll have to let me know and i'll try and reply with it (Firefox just crashed when i tried to copy it all!).
Also, i have UAC turned off and this is the first battle i have attempted to play since installing.
Thanks alot for taking the time to read this (and hopefully solve it!), as i don't know where to start!
Thanks alot,
Josh
The problem i was having was constant crashing either when loading or at the start of all seiges (campaign and historical). To solve this problem i took the following steps (on Windows 7):
Make sure UAC is turned off.
1. Uninstall both parts of the Third Age 2.0 and Medieval 2 and all the Kingdoms expansions.
2. Delete any files remaining in the Medieval 2 directory.
3. Install Medieval 2 Total War (my install is a collectors edition which installs as version 1.0). - For EVERY install, i right-clicked the executable and clicked "Run as Administrator"
4. Install Medieval 2 Total War: Kingdoms (Just one campaign). The installer will update the base game from 1.0 to 1.2 and then to 1.3 (saves downloading them ).
5. Download and Install the version 1.5 patch for Kingdoms (Total_War_Kingdoms_EnFrItGeSp).
6. Install the first part of the Third Age Total War (2010_07_21_TATW_2.0_Part1of2.exe) followed by the second part (2010_07_21_TATW_2.0_Part2of2.exe) and the 2.1 patch (TATW_2.1_Patch.exe).
7. Turn autosave off, by changing "auto_save = 1" to "auto_save = 0" in the "medieval2.preference.cfg" file in the Medieval 2 Directory (open cfg's using notepad or similar).
8. Delete "map.rwm" from "Medieval II Total War\mods\Third_Age\data\world\maps\base" and "Medieval II Total War\mods\Third_Age\data\world\maps\campaign\custom\Fellowship_Campaign" (and anywhere else you find it in the maps folder).
9. Delete all files ending in "strings.bin" from "Medieval II Total War\mods\Third_Age\data\text"
10. Edit the Shortcut to the Third Age Total War. I enabled compatibility mode to Windows XP SP3 (under "Compatibility" tab) and check "Run as Administrator" in the "Advanced..." settings on the "Shortcut" tab.
The game should now work! Just remember not to use the advisor in game.
This helped me to sort out my copy of TATW, so now i can enjoy this terrific mod. I hope this will help others to fix theirs too. Thanks to Germanicu5 for his thread. Good luck!

"And I hope people one day learn to read instructions\install\update\turn off UAC\run game as admin\install submods\not to run the game on higher graphics setting that their system can manage or continue savegames started before making some major changes."
I have just installed the game, updated it, installed the TATW mod and updated that too. UAC is off etc. And my system can handle it very easily on max graphics.

No its a clean install
I will probably just try a full re-install, i was hoping to avoid it and i don't see it making much of a difference, since i have literally just installed the game and mod on this PC.
I have managed to fix this problem (i think, although i have not tested all seiges yet).
I made sure everything in the thread by Germanicu5 was correct (as quoted below). It was all okay but i had to disable autosaving.

I also ran the game in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP 3.
I'm not sure which of these solved the problem, but later i will test both and see which did the trick. Once i'm confident its fully resolved i will edit the first post.
Thankyou to Germanicu5 for his help (or hers? )

Now i can get into the battle, but as soon as i click "Start Deployment", the game crashes as before.
I am trying to assault a small village with no walls called "Coldfells". However, it appears that there are no buildings on the map? Could this be the issue?
EDIT: After more testing, it appears that running the game in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP 3 is what allows me to actually load the battle at all.
EDIT 2: Just tried loading the Hornburg historical battle, which crashes before it loads up.
EDIT 3: I have finally fixed it! I will now update first post.

I see I'm not alone in this, witch ling, there is detailed explanation above by Stylix and Germanicus. For me in the beginning, everything crashed, every battle, so I did the whole installation all over again, and now I come to a situation where regular battles work and sieges of "normal" towns also, but if I try to play the siege of custome city, like Minas Itihil it simply crashes goes out to desktop. I have noticed that this happens only with custom cities. Once I tried to fight a battle near Helms Deep, with Rohan as allies against Isengard, and it would always load but once I started battle and reinforcements came in, it crashed. Also, just last night, huge Mordor army is attacking Minas Ithil and when I try to break the siege, it crashes. It's not the comp itself, I have played huge battles with more than 3500 units and all went fine, I'm the administrator and all other parametres are satisfied, so I don't get it. Does anyone has some "word to the wise", I would appreciate it.

Same thing with me, Except I crash on all Medium or Larger citites
The only thing I could think of right now would try to turn windows in safe mode, but I don't think you can access any games while in safe mode.
i have been able to play this mod for days now.. Until today, it started crashing in the middle of the siege (rhun vs dale, small town), always pretty much at the same time. It might be tied to a fact that i tried removing the garrison script, but even after i reverted it, it still kept crashing. Normal battles are still fine though.
Edit..
it seems that either riverrun(the town i was fighting in) is bugged or the my AI reinforcements, because other siege battles work fine.

I have been playing this and many mods on these forums for yearrs now and i have always been able to find the answer to most problems from all you smart people out there but this one seems to have everyone stumped. I have done all the different setting changes reinstalled everything deleted all folders all the things that usually work and still no joy. I can play the game with no crashes but what seems to happen is i play a seige battle at e.osgilith no problem but the second time it is sieged the battle loads plays for about 3 mins then crashes to desktop with the medieval no sepecfic error thing. I moved troops back to w.osgilith same thing happens .why does it crash at the second seige. also the desktop icon has changed from the ring to a unrecognised page image, this has never happened before. thanks in advance for any help.
Oh well looks like we might have to wait for a new release or something...
I never had any problems when i used to have this mod, but that was an older version, so i'm presuming this crash is a new error...
