A family man's with no time, need for help !

Greetings TWC people.

I am in need of a bit of help, andi hope it will not take too much of the time of the person(s) who will answer but i am trying to find a concrete answer and it is difficult to browse through thousands of partial answers, millions of flames etc.
So, and in hope of a helpfull soul appearing, here are my questions as well as what i have understood so far.

I understand that within 4 weeks we will have DirectX 10.1/11 support and that means shaders 4.1 and 5 as well as AA. Ok i am fine with that. Cant do much to fix it anyway.
I also understand that in 48 hours more or less (24 now i guess) we will have a fix that corrects the graphics autodetection issue.

1. I have an ATI 4890 which is a 10.1 card. In the graphics options i get only Shaders v3. Others are greyed out. So...what will the autodetection fix...fix ? In 24 hours i will not have a greyed out Shaders v4 and will be able to select them although i will not have AA yet ?

2. I saw a workaround with the preferences.script or something. I copied/pasted the one in totalwar.com CA posted (for 4800 series of course) but options remained greyed out. Does it work or not ? If yes what exactly should i do to enable at least Shaders v4x ?
Please dont tell me to read the forums, but - blame it to the popularity of the Total War series - it is almost impossible to filter through everything, to get concise info right now that well, the war is on.

The changes you make to the 'preferense.script.txt' should stick. However, if you go back into the options screens it's likely that some of the setting you changed may have reverted back to default.

The trick is that once you've done the editing you want is to change the file to 'read only' - that way the game can't change it.

To make the file 'read-only' open up a window with the folder (you probably have this already if you edited the file) and right mouse clck the file and select properties. Once that is done simply click on the 'read-only' bit:

If you want to make changes then you will need to uncheck the 'read-only' bit before you can edit the file. It can be a bit painful to do that but at least your settings are not lost.

I would expect that the 'greyed' out options on the options menu to remain so.

If you want to set up the shader model the line in the file is:

gfx_shadermodel 2; # gfx_shadermodel <int>, Set shader model, 0-SM3LQ, 1-SM3, 2-SM4, 3=SM4.1, 4=SM5 #

Thank for for replying ! I edited the file and was a bit concerned that the options remained greyed out. When i return home i will do as you suggested.

@B, I did that (read only) and I still don't get any higher textures than medium. :/
Hoping for that fix to be release soon as it's rather disturbing to know that the demo was 100 times as good looking. (No kidding, medium textures looks worse than RTW).

I presume it may be something to do with your video card rather than anything else.

There not Tone's RSII skins but they look OK to me. I think the lighting is a bit FUBAR. I've seen screens taken in rain/overcast skys and they are glints off helmets..... To me that's just silly - a lot of screens are very hard to do as the sun is behind the unit so it just makes them in a shadow.....

It's due to the auto detection "feature" as I was able to choose much higher settings on the demo.
They said it would be fixed within 48 hours and that's in less than 20 minutes now so I hope for the best.

I know that TW games have a habit of resetting some settings if you open the graphic options menu - the main one for me is the camera type - I set this to the 'debug' version in E:TW and N:TW so you have the same control over the camers as you do with the 'movie cam' in R:TW:

It changes all the settings on the upstart of the game.

Anyway I found a fix to the issue.
Use AMD CCC 10.12 instead of the newer versions and all should work fine.

I don't think the fix will fix anything - apart from autodetection ie the relevant presets will be applied automatically.

I don't think it will enable any new options - certainly not shader4/4.1 as that's coming in the fabled patch.
