It may sound stupid but I never fully understood the mechanics of diplomacy and when you desesperatly need to negociate a ceasefire it can be a real pain in the neck.
Can anyone give some advice please?

You train a diplomat, send him to the enemy's city or army, right-click it, chose 'Ceasefire' from the menu.
That's why Vanila RTW learning campaign was designed for.
The AI usually doesn't accept ceasefire-offers though.

The A.I. typically will not make a cease fire with you if you share a border....unless you bribe them hardcore....which is pointless to do since the A.I. just attacks you next turn anyways.
The Force Diplomacy Minimod helps!

Sometimes it can be useful to bribe them if you don't have a border but otherwise it's pointless. Force diplomacy is good but i really think it shouldn't be overused. I've only come across one time it would have been appropriate; when pontus had one city and refused to be a protectorate even with roman legions bearing down on them.
Speaking of bribery; is it my imagination or does EB make it more difficult to buy off bandits?

Actually, I have had the AI be reasonable (and downright bizarrely helpful) on occasion. The strangest example would be that, roughly 1/3 of the time as Makedonia, Epeiros will agree to a Cease-Fire on Turn 1. That said, I have no idea what goes into those decisions, and most aren't repeatable.
I beat back their first attack with ease. Properly employed, E's can be very deadly, deadlier even than P's and Z's, though they're not as lethal as Paula Abdul or Right Said Fred.

In my Roman campaign (Alex Engine), I was at war with both Lusotanans and Carthage. I took Emporion from the Lusos so they had every right to hate. This of course made me neighbour with Carthage and they invaded immediately. After a few turns Lusos came to me with a peace treaty (they were at war with Carthage the whole time). I used the opportunity to offer them alliance and they took it. No Forced Diplomacy magic needed. I'm beating Carthage now, my armies have moved south, Lusos have two stacks in southern Gaul and yet they do not attack Emporion, neither are there with war with Aedui with whom they share borders now.
The RTW diplomacy just does not work properly, the AI is suicidally stubborn. In my Pontus campaign, inspite of decades passing since the last time either of us even violated eachother's territory, the Sauromatae refuseda ceasefire. Smoesville's story of Pontus refusing to become a protectorate is a common one.
I have occasionally had anomalous things happen though, I wanted to map trade with someone as the Saka, I think Hayasdan, and they just laid 4000 or so mnai on me instead.

The Alex.exe engine is better regarding AI diplomacy.
Allies are enough reliable and don't backstab so often and sometimes you can see a faction accepting vassalage if they have no hope to survive.
