BC 2.02 steam problem

I have tried installing bc with medII on steam, with patch 1.03,, and have followed the instructions on the Steam Users page. the main menu loads fine, but the game will crash whenever i try to start a campaign or custom battle.

I am pretty sure that the problem is that my data folder in:
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\medieval ii total war\mods\Broken_Crescent\data
is missing. The installer didn't dowload it, and i tried reinstalling more than once.

any help would be much appreciated tks.

Ok so I re-read the instructions on the steam installation page and now i'm not sure if there should be another data file in Broken_Crescent\data, or whether it's that data file itself - located in the main Broken_Crescent (uppercase) folder - which I should paste unto the medieval ii total war data file.

in any case, i think there is something missing in the Broken_Crescent\data file. My only two files here are "models_strat" and "sounds" ( i.e. without having pasted anything unto the medieval ii total war data file)
