If I buy the boxed retail version from a store, when I go to install, do I still have to associate it with a Steam account?

Steam is required to play Shogun 2. Just like ETW, and NTW. Its not really an issue.
Not saying it is, I prefer to have the DVD but I also like the Steam options for remote downloading wherever I go. Thanks.
And you can do that. I lost my Halflife 2 disc but could still install due to it being registered as a purchased product on my Steam account. You'll have to put up with downloading the entire thing of the Steam servers though, which isn't a trivial thing with a 20 GB game.![]()
Yeah, I mean its useful for remote locations one-time, but I don't wanna waste my bandwidth on the first install, which is why I wanted to avoid digital purchase
The game comes on two DVD-ROMs.
As others have posted you can install the game from the disc but the game needs to be registered with Steam as part of the process.
This has been the case since Empires Total War was released.

I don't think it's really 20GB, it's just the recommended amount they ask you to have. I would think it's about 10-15GB.
