Default need advice about my Rig

    hello TWC members,

at the release of shogun2 demo i instantly installed and played it.
but ive discovered soon after that my rig is getting a bit outdated.

now ive looked at future releases of other games and my PC certainly needs a upgrade to handle the games that are coming out this year.

this is what i currently have.

    triple core 2,3ghz
    nvidia 9800gtx+
    4gb ddr2 ram

now i thoughed i could upgrade my system quite properly, but discovered that my motherboard has a AM2+ socket which only supports a max of 4 cores.

now i wanted to ask which 1 of my 2 options is best.

    1. get a nvidia 460gtx with a 4 core CPU

( even though the Quad core is already becomming a low standard as it is )

or 2. upgrade properly but face the fact that i need to buy a new motherboard and probable also a 650w power supply ( im probable going for a 560gtx then, and atleast 6 cores / 6gb ram )

    looking forward to your replies.

    greetings,

    me

    Go for Option 1.
That Nvidia card is great and you don't need more than 4 cores anyway. The biggest waste of money I spent was getting a 6 core CPU. Most software doesn't support 4 cores let alone 6! Although if your power supply is a bit weak anyway you might have a little trouble running a 460 gtx, the newer GPU cards are very power demanding.

Depends on what you can afford really.

I recently had the same dilemma and chose to upgrade everything. The way I see it is if you buy sensibly you won't need to upgrade again for a few years.

Here's a tip. If you want a significantly faster computer, invest in a solid state hard drive. Even the faster processors and memory won't improve system performance anywhere near what an SSD will.

I got a core 2 duo E8400 overclocked to 3.6 ghz , and have the same card Nvidia 9800gtx+ , i can run most things on ultra but only upgradfing now from 4 megs of ram to 8 and then also gettingt he gtx460 ........ waiting for end of the year then to built a new pc . I think the mayor influence is the GPU for this game

Quads are a low standard? lol

I cant name 5 games that truly use 4 cores to the maximum.

Even a high clock dual core is fine. It's gonna be 2-3 years before quads are used widespread in games, let alone the 6 and 8 core CPUs that are here and becoming commonplace... it's stupid. High clock rate, have 4GB of RAM at least, and GPU is the main concern, everything else is minor effect. Grab a quad core and best GPU you can afford.

Well it comes down to this: You can get a good deal on a quad core and then buy a decent card and have to upgrade in a year or two, or you just bite the bullet and do it all now.

Personally I would just buy a cheap 4 core and a good DX10 card. Won't cost you much.
