    Default Slamming vs Charging

Thought I had asked this way back in my newb thread but apparently not. I've noticed when I charge any given foot unit against any given enemy foot unit (double right click), they seem to press close and slug it out, keeping some order and engaging in a protracted duel. But when I take my same unit and double right click behind the enemy unit, they pile in with what appears to be considerably more energy and more easily break into their formation (which appears to result in a lot of more dead enemies much faster - I think its because the guys who break through aren't attacked as easily and attack the back of the enemy where they don't get their defense skill.

When I "slam" like in the second example, do they get a charge bonus? Also, is said tactic advisable? Seems to work really well on walls during a siege - even with spearmen.

Charging, it's obvious that it's more effective in flanks/behind of the enemy, due to obvious reasons...

slamming is only recommended when your engaged melee unit isn't in a tight formation(meaning that the stragglers are he ones fighting), and yes, it's best used in siege, if your unit isn't already engaged... in field, charge first before slamming...

Charge as well, the bonus can be significant.

Charge, although the real difference is when using cavalry

Charge will give you that offensive bonus, while slamming afterward gets more of your men into the fight; countering that all too common "backwards shuffle" a unit seems to do once engaged from the front.

Charging is much better. I only "slam" if I want to push forward through an already engaged unit

That usually only happens if your unit wasn't ordered or the proper charge distance away. The main obstacle to charging with infantry is the size of the unit. To flank, order, then charge at their slower speeds is 3x as long as cavalry.

Though cavalry charges can make or break a battle, charges from two handed axemen are extremely effective, especially against unprotected flanks and rears. I just hate how infantry can't charge over as long a distance.

Realistic, charging is only natural for short distances for infantry.

True. Jogging across the battlefeild with light equipment is doable. But to sprint for more than a short distance with a heavy shield is extremely physically demanding. I personally own I large wooden body shield with a boss and reinforced edge, and it's quite heavy. It's great for defensive fighting, but really reminds one on how equipment limits mobility.
