i laugh when i see the AI relying on them. i simply attack their cities instead of fighting on plains, and run the HA's down with my heavy infantry at close range.
so why do people complain about the AI spamming these?

Please refrain from name-calling, guys. Thanks.

If you're Rome all you had to do is form testudo and wait for them to charge.
Annokerate Koriospera Yuinete Kuliansa
Testudo provides little to no defense against Cav melee...it will hold the first impact but once the horses get into the cohort it is taken severe casualties and routed in not time as the Legionaries can not fight effectively while in that formation.
This tactic only works with non cataphract archers or if they have no Cataphract Cav to charge into your testudo.
I've rarely seen enemy AI cavalry charging out of a fortified position and if you have like 10 cohorts you can afford to let one of them be exhausted.
When I assault wooden walls I always first send something to drain their missiles, then I send forward all missile troops that usually tends to at least halve the enemy force inside the walls, then sending in the heavy infantry is the final phase and even then I try to trap the enemy by creating road blocks to avoid having to fight on squares (fighting in barbarian tows is really much more difficult since pathfinding ised up and you can't create chokepoints) I avoid melee as much as possible when playing campaign, even 10 casualties are annoying.
Enoughs enough. Closed.
