While waiting for the exciting release of SAI, I have been whiling away my time on the Procopius campaign. It is a blast, to be honest, as I was able to ambush Valens early on and butcher him and his troops in the Isaurian hills as I advanced to take most of the Pontic and Cappodocian territories. In the west, around the Danube, I am struggling to hold the limes - Sirmium and Singidunum have been taken and then lost both to Quadi and west Roman troops over the years. I was terrified to see Valentinian advance with several full stacks of elite troops (with embedded siege engines!) down the Illyrican coast but crowed with delight when an assassin of mine took him out with a 2% chance!
All good fun.
However, the year is now 379 ad and low and behold, Prococius expired on me at a ripe old age. His son - Germanus - is now Augustus and to be honest my heart is not in it now. I have no emotional attachment to this Germanus and my empathy is waning.
Then I realised that part of the attraction to this period for me is the empathy and role-play with characters like Julian, Shapur II, Valentinian, and so on. The idea of playing Julian and advancing against Persia and then on to India (after Alexander) is a key component of why I enjoy playing this mod.
But there is an odd bitter stone at the heart of this fruit - and that is the game turn durations. I was really enjoying building up Procopius into a battle-hardened Augustus in the style of a Trajan but old age simply crept up on him in the end. I knew it was coming and started playing him in desperation to make most use of him while he still lasted.
So I would like to propose a sub-mod (if JH will give me permission to use his work!) that I will open up here once the mod is released in full.
I will script not a 4 or 6 turn game play but a 12 turn one - 8 summer turns followed by 4 winter turns which will allow the characters to age 1 year every full 12 turns.
Bear with me here: this will allow a more detailed in-depth military campaign wherein Julian or Procopius may march across the empire and engage in full invasions across months and years rather than years and decades. So for example, my Procopius campaign will have now only reached the year 369 ad rather than 378 ad.
The advantage here is to mainly play longer with the characters. Recruitment and building times stay the same in terms of turn times but happen faster only in terms of years. Army movements are more crucial in summer periods which now play out over 8 turns and become restricted for the following 4 winter turns - and so on.
This is just a small sub-mod for those who would like to play within the time-frame in a more historical fashion. I will design and implement it once the mod is released and then release it if enough players wanted to have a bash at it!
