AVG Anti-Virus. It even has a resident shield that catch the virus the moment it gets on your computer

As of now there's no better free anti-virus solution than AVG to be had AFAIK. But remember to always complement with tools like ad-aware and spybot for complete protection.

    Another vote for Avast.

Btw doesn't AVG use the Avast engine?

Windows firewall is rubbish, get Sygate, Kerio or Outpost (all free).

If you are willing to change OSes, then Linux is the one to go with, no viruses, and it is free.
