Please help me not be awful

I really want to like this game online. I'm trying. really. i've played every single TW game. This is my first online. Needless to say, I am not exactly having a blast. I know it's not if you win or loose..............but loosing every single time sucks.

I CAN'T WIN A GAME. I am practically going into them now wondering how badly I'll lose.

1v1 2v2 3v3 land, naval. I cannot win. I try different units. Different countries. Different maps. I can't win. I can't defend. I can't attack. I see someone crush me. I try that on the next game, only to get crushed myself.

The enemy always seems to beat me in every way. Their lights always beat my lights. Regardless of how many I have. His line always manages to rout mine and rip it apart in the blink of an eye. It doesn't matter what I'm using. The Old guard in 2 ranks gets beat by Ottoman militia. And the enemy also always seems to have more troops. I think I win part of the battle..................but there is another 8 line units and 4 lights on that side. Awesome. This when I have at most 4-5 rifles, 4 cav, a general, and the rest line. He still has more in the right place at the right time.

I can't use cavalry. He always smashes my lights with his. I use mine, his lights get away and his lines all fire perfect volleys into my cavalry. I've gotten to the point where I might not bother. Did I mention his lights and lines always seem to outrange mine? Always. He'll take out my lights and then just shoot me with lights. But if I advance, I get routed.

1st of all, if your having problems winning I would say only use the French faction, the Prussian faction or the Brits. Leave all the other factions untill you start winning. Next you need to choose a play style, and build an army around it. Camping with 2 lights will not work, same as rushing without cav. I would strongy recommend Prussia, the best all around build seems to be 5 Prussia lights, 2 foot guards, 5 lancers, a generals staff, and the rest line inf. Remember to allways spread your inf out, try flanking. Wrap around your opponent to maximize fire power. Allways keep your light protected by line inf. Also try not using your cav early, wait tilll near the end of the battle. Other then that I would say try adding some of the guys on this forum, and add the guys who beat you. Play team battles with them and see how they win. gl

tyler is spot on - but also watch vid replays - mine, pointman, Jmartin, Risquard, rattue etc - you will find link on one of these you tube accounts to all the others. watch them and ask us questions about things. dont give up we have all been there.

Def watch youtube replays. They are very useful. Check out: http://www.youtube.com/user/TWReplays He's a player called jmartin and a lot of his replays take the form of tutorials teaching you how to handle your army. Keep applying the lessons you learn and you'll come good eventually. Hell i'm still useless at using cav.

As for MP video channel, Julius put together a good list over at the official forum.
Finally, as a general advice, save replays of your games and watch them afterwards to see what went right and wrong.

I just played again, using some tips I saw some from videos. It went okay for a little while. I was prussia. Had my lights all target one unit, however it did not rout for some reason.So that was the begining of the end really, my lights routed, so I had to respond with cav to prevent him from kiting me. The cav routed. It was 2v2 so player 2 started attacking my flank with his lights. I tried the rest of my cav against them (They were unsupported)

And they routed my cavalry. Unsupported lights. So I nearly rage quit and instead just watched his arm steamroll mine.

You should post a replay or two so we can see exacly what went wrong and tell you your mistakes and what to do to avoid them. BTW did you accualy click on one enemy unit? if you did thats a bad idea better line up the lights in spread out formation and just try to get a good position and let the units fire away.

yes do what kras said with lights till you get use to using them - target firing lights at one unit is really an advanced tactic for when you get better using them. so hold off on harder tactics and work on the basics

Watch youtube videos made by the Pointman and try to learn from each battle you lose. If you get absolutely smashed by someone save the replay and try copy their army and strategy.

Lol, I went to check out his videos only to realize that I've already been blocked by him, and I don't even remember why. Perhaps forgotten fallout from all that PoM crap? Whatever.

Anyone who uses the block feature on youtube for anything save spam(aka, disagreement, etc.) is morally out-of-touch with humanity in my eyes, so whatever.

I'm having a hell of a time getting into the MP too. Seems like every time I get into a game something goes wrong (i.e. general sniped by cannons within first ten seconds) or I just get my ass kicked (By campers).

for the two guys who are having trouble in games. my steam name is timgreen187 i think. its not triphammer. even though triphammer is wot i usually go under but i do play under alot of different names also so i can get games easier. if u still cant find me then find the HUNTSMAN clan group page on steam or find a HUNTSMAN member and ask them to point u in my direction.
i will get u to play alongside me, rather than aganst me as i think u will learn more that way. at the end of the day though. other players and myself can only give u handy hints and tips and playing the game is down to yourselfs. if u have any talent this will help.
i have tried to help players before and tbh some just dont get it and never will.
my advice is to save your replays, watch the abundant amount of vids on youtube teaching u stuff like in jmartins vids and above all. keep things simple.

I almost quit playing this game when I first started playing online. I know exactly how you feel. What helped me get better was patience in battles. Instead of trying to make something happen, go with the flow of the battle. Imagine your army is a singular energy force, and you have to apply it in a certain way to defeat your enemy without comprising it's own integrity. Water won't get through a wall by smashing into it(Tsunami's are the exception). It needs to locate the cracks and slip in.

Don't look at each unit as a separate entity, but all of them of parts of one entity. This is the mindset I got into that helped me see things differently so I could play much better. Patience is another things. Being fast can help you, as you can overwhelm your opponent, but you can't get carried away.

Making a mistake doesn't always lose you the battle, but it makes it that much harder to come back. If you're patient and time your moves right and keep it fluid, this becomes much less of a problem.

My little brother had the same problem last night. You have to be organized, fluid, methodical and precise. It takes practice and the right mindset. I would definitely hit some of the guys up for tips though, you won't be disappointed, they sound like they know their stuff.
