you have good and evil factions........
good factions are: gondor, rohan, Eriador, High elves, Silvan Elves, Dwarves, Dale
evil factions are: mordor, Isengard, Orcs of the Misty Mountains, Orcs of Gundabad, Harad, Rhûn

if your are not verry good on campaign first try to play with high elves.

Maybe you should watch the movies? I've had a good knowledge of lotr lore for as long as I can remember so I'm not sure how helpful they'll be but I think that they'll help a bit. If you can be bothered you might wanna read the books too and hopefully then you would know enough lore to enjoy it.

Just briefly though there are those under Sauron's dominion and the "free people" who are free of it. Seeing as it is Total war sometimes the factions fight factions who they might not have in lord of the rings (although there is a massive backstory which was taken into consideration so many non-canon wars make sense but thats pretty deep into the lore).

Basically Sauron controls all of the orc factions as well as the "evil men" factions.

The good factions are the elves, dwarves and the "western men" and their allies.

So basically the only people who are "neutral" are humans but they've already taken sides in this and there aren't really any neutral sides anymore, it is total war after all.

Maybe if you told us exactly what you want to know? Would you like an in-depth history of middle-Earth? The basics? A guide of how to play third age?

if you love fantasy and sci-fi, for God's sake, don't watch the movies first, read the books and then you can go for PJ

Read The Hobbit then LOTR then Silmarilion then Unfinished Tales then, and only then watch the films. This ofcourse is if you really are keen about the lore and history. But if you'd rather just get on with it and bash some skulls, watch the films

It makes me sad when people say they don't like reading books.

Absolutely. Me too. There is much wisdom and joy to be found in books; And a good book is just as good as a good woman.

    @Sanderman2

Yeah, but the movies change a lot of crucial things. I too have seen the movies before reading the books and the books are much better.

lso, the books give alot more, as you say Lordinquisitor, information not just about the characters and the story but on the world as a whole. Remember the LOTR is just one tale amongst many.

And a book never says no, never has a headache and when you're done with it you can easily throw it out...

I don't want to discourage you, but if you hate to read books, i doubt LOTR is for you as it has complicated language, I know many who have started and putted it aside.

There are Fantasy novels, and then there are Fantasy novels. No too are identical, and some are radically different from any other you will have ever read. Don't judge a book by it's genre!
Lord of the Rings is a brilliant literary masterpiece. Do not underestimate it.
Tolkien started writing myths and legends about Middle-Earth while he was fighting in the trenches of World War I. He proceeded to make an incredibly detailed world with over 20 unique languages, several of which have enough information about them published that you could learn to speak them (at least passably).
Then he told a story to his kids, which they convinced him to write down. The Hobbit was born, and was published. Then people kept asking him for more, so he wrote the tale of the War of the Ring, known as The Lord of The Rings.
This story, while brilliant in itself, is so brilliant because it's the product of over fourty years of world-building. Read it. Enjoy it.
