Im playing on H/H as well with Rome, but I didnt have to abandon Spain or Dyrrachium. I just pulled as many men out of Sicily as possible to deal with the rebellion in southern Italy and raised taxes to raise an entire new legion. So I had two legions in southern Italy after 2 turns and that was enough to re-take southern Italy. After that I marched young Scipio and Marcellus on Hannibal and beat him in a pretty epic and violent clash by RTW standards, the battle itself took 25 min (real time). I had lost Arminium to Mago so after Hannibals defeat I retook that, as well as the city that is surrounded by the Alps in Cisalpine Gaul(forget its name). Right now I sailed young Scipio and Marcellus into Hispania and am in a pretty desperate situation, I've taken 2 Carthagian cities but the Iberians turned on me mid march. I have just 2 understrength legions in Hispania right now as well as raising the Arvecani(sp) spearman auxiliaries.

leave the province in NW Greece as it's a really hard province to hold with the onslaught of the incredibly hard-to-route Macedonian Phalangite units and stubborn elite hoplites, and instead focus on Spain, which is a more defensible province and when conquered pretty much isolated from further attacks by other factions. Spain has tons of river crossings you can defensively and offensively exploit during your conquest, and with the excellent armor-piercing Balearic slingers (AOR) for you to defend the bridges with it's almost too easy on all game difficulties.

Here's what I do, I order up about 6 units of Balearic slingers, 8 heavy infantry (Legionary or AOR units with the "Javaline throwing" capability) 4 infantry reserves (covering the the flanks of the bridgehead/rivercrossing), single cavalry unit and your General. At the start of the battle stack the 8 heavy infantry into 2 groups of 4 the 4 being side by side and the other 4 exactly behind them, then station them at the mouth of the bridgehead/rivercrossing, but not too close, make sure they are far enough that slingers on the side of the enemy can't fire on them, then have the 4 reserve infantry stationed at the flanks to isolate the bridgehead, 2 on the left 2 on the right to plug in the left and right holes so that the enemy is isolated in a pocket and has to face infantry units on their right, left and forward positions when they finally cross, and lastly your six slingers, they should be posted on the right and left flanks 3 units per flanks for maximum damage on the enemy's flanks.

    It should look like this.

Put all of your units in Defensive mode, turn fire-at-will off for your Legions and AOR infantry until the enemy is heavily clustered into that pocket then let the javelins loose. Try and keep your slingers from hitting your own troops, micro manage them to where they attack heavily cluster units, and if the enemy general joins the fray target and eliminate him to cause a route.

I defeated stacks of Carthaginians and spanish celts this way, killing at times 5000+ units for the loss of only about >200 units at VH/H difficulty mode.

To keep the show running have fleets of ships transport stacks of pure legionary forces from Italy to heal legions up to full strength and the rest retired to grow the starting city. Also to make it easier fighting 2-3+ stacks of enemy units recruit about another 6 units of slingers to act as an independent computer controlled reinforcement for continual barrage for when your main slingers run out of ammo.

Conquered Spain relatively easy this way capturing towns when I've decimated their armies on the bridges.

    Fun times

FOCUS ON THE WEST! Get the western portion of the Empire. Spain has many mineral resources to exploit. Dont get me wrong the East has resources and a massive Greek population to enslave, but the fighting never ends. You ally with Pergamon they will betray u when u border them, beat them allied to the Selucids they will betray u opening a massive eastern front.

    Get the west first.

put forts at the Eastern crossings at the Black Sea strait and the Hellespont. Instantly stop the constant warring. It's all about effective strategy at that point.

Once Italy was secured after the rebellions, and the legions were built up again, I focused on the two cities of Carthago and Syracuse. I also held on to the two colonies by reinforcing them and building the walls aqap. Taking Carthago is fairly easy to do, and will allow your island above it (Sardinia..cant think of old name tho) to not get harassed. The Greeks will break the alliance soon enough anyways, so welcome Syracuse. This new income from both cities is a nice boost for the start. After that, I went from Massilia to southern Gaul region, and finally into Iberia when I had enough legions and governors. Carthage then fell from a couple of legions attacking from their west and from the city Carthago as well.

Once both nations were fully conquered, I re-organized the armies by leaving just one in Africa in my eastern most province (south of Sicily) as a defense measure. I then had a couple of legions facing the Gauls for when they will attack with reserves in the cities, and the rest took northern Italy and the Illryian province. Then it was a time of 'peace' or non-expansion for a few decades or so. I like to have a solid economic and military foundation before getting too big as well as letting the Gauls, the Boiis, or whomever grow and expand on their own. Building highways are also very nice to have done before future expansions.

On the eastern front is very hard indeed especially on VH/VH. I found myself in war against Maecdon, Pergamon, Sparta and the Greeks at the same time. I guess that it was poor strategy to abandon Spain, but the Carthaginians along with their Galaecii allies kicked me out of the game, only to betray one another. However for now things go fine- I managed to destroy Sparta ( the poor guys didn't have wall in Sparte), and Macedon, and to kick Pergamon from the Asia Minor coastline. To conclude I should say that this is the most challenging total war campaign i have ever played (and still playing)
